Brand new Caad 10, What tha heck?
Just purchased a 2014 Caad 10 with 105 group from lbs yesterday. Today five minutes into a ride with my son the chain drops off the smallest gear on the cassette grinds the paint down and binds up. I pull over and get it back right, then I try to investigate whats going on down the road, and its making noise, with the chain in the middle of the cassette and on the big chain ring. I shift to the small chain ring, and then shift the rear to the biggest cog, this time the chain pops off the other side and chips the paint off the stays, and locks up the back wheel, the result is a warped wheel. And all I want to do is ride.....
from reading I know one side may be the limit screw (do not know how to adjust it yet). Yet, is it possible for me to be the problem on the first malfunction, due to trying to shift to fast?

If there is no frame damage the paint can be repaired cheap and easy. It can be user error but there is also a possibility the derailleurs were not tuned just right. If that is the case, that issue is with the shop. Go back to the shop and make sure everything is dialed in just right.

I'd demand a new frame if I were you. They screwed it up. But I do have to ask what you were doing on either end of the cassette on a casual first ride. Not your fault, but I just don't see why you would have been in those gears.

Wait, what? Bikes don't have a run-in period. All the gears should be usable from first ride.

That does sound frustrating. I wouldn't expect the chain to jump off much on a new bike unless the front derailleur is not adjusted correctly. I usually have more chain issues when my chain is starting to get warn and stretched, but that's not the case here.
Chains can jump off at any time, even when the derailleur is adjusted correctly, which can sometimes be dangerous (like when you're about to hammer on the pedal and there's nothing there!!!) I'd recommend something like the K-Edge Chain Keeper (shown below) no matter what. I almost bought one of these because I was beginning to have issues with the chain falling off, but I bought a new Trek that has a chain catcher built-in instead

The rear derailleur has two limit screws. One is supposed to keep the derailleur from going too far to the right and have the chain fall off the small cog and the other is supposed to keep it from going too far to the left and have the chain go off the large cog. Sounds like neither one was adjusted properly when you were given the bike.

Shop should profusely apologize, and fix to your satisfaction.

Low-end limit screw in particular is bad. That one can destroy frames and result in wrecks.

took it in to the lbs and the owner he asked first off: what did you do change the skewer? I said no, not sure what that would do even if I did, then once he had it on the stand and trued the wheel he said the 105 chain had a kink in it from the factory; I will upgrade you to an ultegra chain. he said since it was cold yesterday it might have made the chain drop due to this. He then put touch up paint on the gash in the frame, and did nothing to the chips in the stay. did not offer a new tire for the flat spot from it locking up. I told him when I got there that I felt the limit screws were not adjusted; once he said it was done, I asked about them, and he said he had to re adjust them because when the chain bind happen it moved all the settings. (I normally have a short fuse, something I'm trying to work on) so, I stayed calm and did not push back much, otherwise I might have escalated my speech and volume. I wanted to tell him that with the mechanics of what happen it is impossible for these screws to move the way he says they did. Yet' I stayed quite and told myself its only cosmetic issues to your bike, do not blast this guy verbally and loose what integrity you have. I plan to ride the bike later after my lunch settles, and see if it is fixed.
One thing is for sure I have a bad taste in my mouth from this shop, its unfortunate too as this place looked like it had promise.

Good deal on keeping your integrity. You do however have evry right to feel the way you do about this. The first thought in his mind is "wat did you do". The Cannondale dealer in my area has young and IMO inexperienced mechs working on the bikes.
These kids are literally college guy's just there to make a buck. I am now a firm beleiver that when looking for a bike mech, look for the guy with the white beard that just does it because he loves it.

Yeah, you didn't shift "wrong". Not even possible I don't think?
There's nothing more annoying than someone who screwed up going into full-on CYA mode and avoiding responsibility while lying through their stinking teeth. How far you push it is up to you- life is short, the damage cosmetic. But don't hesitate to let them know that you know they are lying and that you are not impressed, if and only if that makes you happier. They certainly deserve it.

I would ask him to put on a new tire, then walk out & refuse to pay.

Amen to that. They ****ed up the adjustments and he's trying to blame it on something else that doesn't even make sense. He's basically assuming you have zero knowledge and taking advantage of it.
You're lucky you didn't crash. This guy should be apologizing for his mistake.
I'd go back and let him know you're not some moron who is going to take his bull**** excuses. Either he does something to make it right or he doesn't. Either way, I'd never go back there again and I'd tell everyone I knew to never go there, either.

Of course. Not saying otherwise. I was just saying it is a bit unusual to be on the ends of the cassette when you are not climbing a steep hill, hammering or flying downhill. Not criticizing him, just wondering how it came about.

Bike lane in the woodlands is the shop. I just rode 15 miles with my son, Shifted fine in todays "chill" I guess the ultegra chain is cold weather hahaha. Guys I really want to go back and complain, yet I know I will blow a top. On the flip side I have a bike that I like riding alot, and hopefully will ride it alot. Caad 10 is the way to go, imo it is the best riding bike of all the ones i have tested including the tarmac expert. I'm surprised by how light it is, really quick too. time to work on the engine now.
