Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Took a gamble on Yoeleo

These were delivered today and came really well packed. Wheels out of the box were true with no adjustment required. Specs are following:

Yoeleo 50mm 23mm wide full carbon clincher (basalt braking surface)
3K Glossy weave
Novatech A291SB/A482SB in red with matching skewers
bladed spokes and red nipples

In the box they came with blue brake pads but I installed Swiss Stop Black Prince pads. They also included extra spokes.

Took it for a 15 mile spin and hubs are very smooth and the black prince pads work really well. I didn't notice a decrease in stopping power over my Ksyrium Equipe with regular swiss stop pads.

Pic of my EVO with the wheels on:

Of course only time will tell how they hold out but out of the box I am pretty impressed. Yoeleo did a great packing job and shipping was very fast.

I have been thinking about trying them out as well. Did you weigh them before putting on tires? How much were they shipped to the states?

Keep us informed on how you like them! Very Nice bike, by the way!

Thanks and I didn't weigh them because I don't own a proper scale. Total shipped to the states was $564 and got here in a week. I was definitely impressed though on how true they were out of the box. I have purchased Mavics before that were no where near as true as these brand new.

Any idiot can get a wheel true. Properly tensioned is a different matter.

Really, you bought Mavic built wheels that weren't true? Or do you mean you bought wheels with Mavic rims, built-up by someone other than Mavic, which were out of true?

Very. I love my wheels though and for 600 bucks you can't beat them. Mine have ceramic bearings for an extra $50 and they roll forever. They also weigh less than 1500grams and feel it. Mine are 50mm 25mm wide. The braking surface is not Top notch but good enough with the Swissstop Black Prince not with the yellows. Had a few cases of the burning smell with yellow pads. Overall Rate them 8/10 and bang for the buck 9/10! Like I said between these and my ultegra RS80s (same price) I'd go with yoleos a thousand times over.

Thanks for the quick review. Do you order them through their website or some other place like ebay?

As sketchy as it sounds the guy has a few websites. Send him an email asking for the latest one and he'll give you the latest and greatest. Parts and prices may vary per website but not much. Some websites offer DT Swiss hubs, those are expensive. All of them pretty much come with Novatech Hubs and you can "upgrade" to lighweight hubs (china brand) which shaves about 100g and add ceramic both for $150. I say explore the website since there are soooo many options to chose from. You can chose the shape of the wheel, wheel depth, hubs, bearings colors and even customize decals. You can build a set for $400 but you can go up to as much as $1,500.

Leo will answer in broken english but don't worry, it is legit and their service is actually good.

I have a set of their 50mm deep/23mm wide clinchers on my bike. I built the wheels myself (PowerTap rear, matching Cyclops front hubs, DT Comp spokes, 28r/24f) a little over a year ago. I'm using Black Prince pads as well.

I have one season on them and am pretty pleased. Spoke bed depths were regular (I've seen Chinese wheels with wide variance here). They are tensioned (to 130 kgf) and trued right since I built them myself, and they have stayed so. Braking has been good from a stopping power point of view but can be noisy. The Black Prince pads sometimes stick to the braking surface and don't release until the bike is moved forward -- but some research of Black Prince reviews tells me that's not entirely abnormal.

The ERD measurement given on the website was off. If you do build a set, measure them yourself before ordering spokes.

I really hope people start paying more attention to these kind of wheel builders. While I don't think that a solid set of zipp should cost $700 like the Yoeleos I don't believe they should cost $3k either. If people start seeing cheaper alternatives as a viable option for carbon (which they really are even with the taboo still on foot) maybe the big name brands will start shifting their prices towards a more reasonable budget. They heavily depend on the argument that they produce the only REAL SAFE wheel out there and that it warrants the $3k price tag. With wheels like November and Boyd in the market the monopoly is bound to fall down. Only those with deep pockets (fewer) will dish out cash to have the name etched on their carbon hoops since regular people will have other more sensible options.

The thing is, wheel building is non-trivial. Bad parts and bad builds can have really bad consequences. As with anything else on which my safety depends, I like to know I'm dealing with someone with skin in the game. YMMV.

I could be wrong, but I thought he meant how loud does the hub sound due to the amplification effects of the carbon rims. Even almost silent hubs when paired with aluminum rims can sound like a lawnmower as part of a deep carbon rim wheel. Maybe Yoeleo does something to their rims to quiet the wheels. It is not usually the hubs which are SO different.

Yoeleo 38mm x 25mm wde wheels on my Focus CX

I just installed some Yoeleo 38mm x 25mm carbon clinchers on my Focus CX bike with SwissStop Yellows and wow! what a package! $587.00 all included, delivered Toronto, Canada. The wider 25mm wheels are amazing on the trails / gravel roads and they roll smooth and true. I roll $2700.00 Mavic Carbones on my roadie and after an inordinate amount of research, I grabbed these! They look even better with the Schwalbe tires!

Any chance of an updated report on those wheels?

ZIPP are expensive because they are made in the USA, they do a lot of aero development, and sponsorship.

Innovating costs a lot of money and that has to be recouped.

Chinese wheels only have to copy products- not develop them, with much cheaper labor costs.

Wheel building is trivial. It's cheap and simple.
That's why you can have a full bike at Walmart for $200.

Quality is definitely a safety issue to look for in carbon wheels, but the drama gets old.

Run what you want, just because a wheelset costs $500 doesn't mean it's unsafe.
Unknown reputation is more risky.

yup and Yoeleo has a pretty good reputation. Search different forums and you'll find many satisfied people running their wheels for several years

I'm wondering about the spoke tension too.

FWIW, I bought the exact same wheels, except with flat weave/look, just over 2 years ago. They now have ~8,000 miles on them (I weigh 170# and do lots of climbing) and have been flawless, except that the pads that shipped with the wheels were basically useless. I'll likely buy another set, soon, for my other road bike.

Bought mine in Jan for commuting and my buddy ended up borrowing them. Since then he's put on 3k miles with 80 races still strong. the only think i found them to be weaker compared to my rovals or enve was the braking during rain.
