Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh crud. Met 10 Wheels a few Tour de Cure Indy's ago. He's one of the few guys around here that can write short posts that say a lot, a talent that I've always been envious of.

Get well!

Fred, we've got your number!

Last Friday, before the accident, I had sent Fred this tee shirt. No special reason............, just saw it and thought of him. Maybe he'll think I have special powers? Nope, I don't have or he'd be on the road already!

Thanks guys for posting.

Thoughts and prayers for 10Wheels, his family and his riding partners. Hope for a speedy recovery for one of the most welcoming members I think this forum has.

Sorry for the lapse in posting condition updates; I was under the impression that it would be handled by the Bike Forums moderator group. Also understand that I've had no contact with those who might be able to have firsthand knowledge of Fred's condition outside what I read on Facebook sites (despite sharing my phone #). This includes a brief fb contact with the gentleman (Dave) who was riding in front of Fred but did not witness the accident and his report that a motorist some distance away said that it appeared as though Fred steered the bike toward the ditch (possibly to avoid an obstacle!) but there was not any contact with anything that would have caused this. Please understand, I personally question whether or not Fred consciously was in control at that moment. With that said, I will share what I currently know.

Fred is home and moves about the house using a walker or cane. His eating is rather normal and and the one report I'd personally key into was that 'he is getting back to his old self'. Now, for those of you who don't know him personally, his dry wit and pungent comments help to define Fred! So I was glad to hear that. He did go to the doctor a few days ago and still experiences blurred vision in one eye (left I believe) and a comment was made that his helmet was dented and cracked on that same side.

I have NOT heard from Fred and feel he has not been on the computer but I was told he is aware that YOU GUYS ARE CONCERNED AND HOPING FOR THE BEST, and that he really enjoyed hearing that. As a personal friend and occasional cycling partner of Fred's, friends can be the most important part of life. So, if you have something to say to Fred..........., post it!

If I hear anything, I'll post. Thanks for asking.

Condition update (on the helmet!)

This picture was sent to me via Fred's email account (probably from Fred). I don't believe I need to elaborate on the impact severity it would take to crack helmet foam, but I feel confident in saying that he's still with us because of this 'skid lid'!

Nothing else was said in the email (the first to me from him since the accident), but the contact was quite uplifting. And like you, I'm really looking forward to him (1) rejoining us and (2) hearing his take on the matter.

It takes special talent to have a 1 person accident. I'm proud to say I have done it too. Keep up the good work, 10 wheels.

Condition update:

Report from a family member, Wednesday, January 22, 6:00PM EST: .......... "is about the same. He had a bad night last night with his arm cramping and having muscle spasms. He really can't stand to open his eyes because of the dizziness. He will go for more heart testing on Tuesday and (family member) will get a referral for him to see an eye doctor. I am really sad. I thought he would be better."
