Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same here - for me I've gone beyond "good" suffering into "bad" when I get dizzy and get saliva in my mouth. Usually from either brutal hills or intervals. Other than this seems to be when I get 190bpm+, no other description.

Only sports beside cycling this has happened to me are rowing, boxing, and ice hockey. Those are my "bucket list" activities

Lately my theme seems to be "Toil". If I toil long enough, I cramp and limp home. I'm finding it difficult to achieve sufficient physical pain for an extended enough period to reach "suffer".

Well i went for a run today. My last and longest run ever was 3.1 miles in november 2012. Today my roubaix finally crapped on me, the front shifter snapped and it is now in the shop for a few days. I ended up putting 7.8 miles on the bike. Could have taken the panasonic but had enough of dealing with mechanical crap so guess what, lets go run. I didmy first ever 10k in 56 minutes. I have to say that while i always thought runningwas tougher than riding, it was fairly pleasant. I think i was constantly @ 170bpm for those 56 min. It did not feel like 170bpm on the bike. While ican say that my legs are completely cooked,my cardio was great. I do have to say, respect to the runners. It hurts. However, ive suffered much more on the bicycle. They are different. I could never hold 170bpm on the bicycle for an hour. That would mean around 300+watts for an hour.. Nah.

When I suffer, my body pulses with every heartbeat as a sledge hammer drums against my rib cage. My temples and hands ebb with each thud. My legs leave (lactic acid), all I can do is keep the bike upright while I fight disorientation. If my legs return I remind them why they left the first time. I refuse to return home with gas in the tank, the path beckons "Is that not why you are here?!"

Four Noble Truths
1. Suffering exists
2. Suffering arises from attachment to desires
3. Suffering ceases when attachment to desire ceases
4. Freedom from suffering is possible by practicing the Eightfold Path

Was that the derailleur? Or, the brifter? Assuming it was your derailleur, does that mean you've also ordered rings and a chain to go with the new one?

;-)

If you're experiencing what I described when you walk or cycle slowly up a small hill like I do ... I highly recommend you pay a visit to your local GP ASAP. It's NOT good!!

I experience all that when my HR hits 130 bpm.

It is not saliva in my mouth, it is a big mouthful of stomach acid, and my lunch if I've eaten recently ... same as what happens when I lean forward to tie my shoe.

And I certainly don't feel like a king. I feel sick and horrible. There are no endorphins, no rush, no desire to pedal another stroke.

I don't go looking for that sort of pain and discomfort ... I would give so much to have it gone! I deeply wish I could climb small hills without that feeling of misery. It has seriously hampered my cycling.

Metallic taste in my mouth.

Rubber limbs burn. The snap disappears and my legs become tree trunks.

Snot draped head bobbles from side to side.

Vision narrows. Ears burn.

Sphincter lets go.

The brifter snapped. It would go to the big ring then come back down. It would not index at all. Also turns our the fd cage is dented and the rd has seized due to trauma... I guess the bike is in need of a complete rehaul.

Good god man! It sounds as though your bike suffers worse than you.

So, is it inheriting the 9000? Or, has that already gone on the TCR?

Did the Roubaix have 6600 or 6700 on it?

were the cables prone to snapping due to the design of that series ultegra? I know on the new di2 they went back to the older style.

No Ultegra issues that I'm aware of. There were issues with the first production run of 9000 series Dura Ace chewing through cables. But, I believe that has been remedied.

?*******ay what???? There haven't been any issues with the electric wires fatiguing that I'm aware of. The only issue I've heard about was the one related to early mechanical 9000.

Any chance you've simply encountered the well documented issue of drying greese preventing the rachet pawl from engaging? Shimano brifters have been prone to that for over a decade. A simple solvent/light lube (WD40) flush and relubrication are usually all that are neccessary to fix it.

Or, did something actually crack/break? Which would be reasonably rare.

The 9000 will go into the TCR. The roubaix has 6700.

To be honest I have no idea. I think it has gotten to a point where I just want a functional bike. Thank god I still have the Panasonic and I could pull my good ride today. Although in pain due to the run yesterday it was a pretty awesome and enjoyable ride. The 1988 Panasonic doesn't have a single hiccup.. I met a guy with a TCR today. Sexy bike! Can't wait to get mine.

For me, it is riding into big headwind. I can handle up the big hills on hot and humid days - just try to find a rhythm and breathing pattern - but big head wind, even dropping gears still feels like suffering.

I tell ya' what. I'll make you one helluva' deal. When you've grown tired of "suffering" with your crap components, just remove the brifters, front and rear derailleurs, associated cabling and those Quarq cranks with the crappy rings. Box it all up and ship it to me. (PM for address details) I will dutifully assemble it on my reliable "Test Vehicle", run it through a thorough diagnostic assessment and replace, repair and tune components as required. I'll even go so far as to gurantee it will work as intended.

Deal! Sounds like less of a pain in the arse than dealing with 4 different mechanics in my area, each one less helpfull than the last.

After the realization that I do not cry from pain after my nasty crash...it's just laughter. When I get dropped, it's funny because it hurts so bad, yet these people just steam-roll me.
