Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - January 18/19

Tell us about your cycling adventures this weekend ... inside or out. Tell us about your other sports too.

Saturday - 81.86 km!! That's the longest ride we've done since 12 May 2013.

Rowan had the day off, and so off we went. Over the long bridge, up the cycleway, onto the road, onto the highway to New Norfolk. And we stopped for a break and lunch there. And then back again into the strong sea breeze.

The temperature peaked at 22.5, but had dropped off to 16.3 degrees by the time we got home.

79 miles today, which is a personal best distance.

I started an hour before the group ride, when it was 33 degrees. Then rode 40 miles with the group, twenty uphill and into a pretty good headwind. After the group ride, peeled off with a friend and rode another 25 miles. When we finished it was 82 degrees. Overall a nice ride on a nice day.

You're well on your way to riding that century. You could probably ride it quite comfortably next week.

Well, I didn't ride today (though I did try to rally up a buddy to ride- see below) but I did ride on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this last week. 33.5 miles each time; it's a route I call "Winter Bone" because it's my normal 60-miler with the meat stripped off... leaving just the hilliest part.... works great for these shorter winter days.

.... which is a GOOD thing because holy CARP it's been cold! And foggy. Each day I rode was mid-30's. not much fun until I hit the first big climb, then I warm up and am fine. My new bike totally rocks for climbs- love it.

My buddy wouldn't ride today. He was like, dude, it's 35 degrees and foggy. I'm like.... so? What's your point?

80 mile round trip to/from the Pinnacles National Monument. These "winter" days are annoying; you start riding with a wind vest, two thin wool base layers, knee warmers and arm warmers; you finish with all that junk in your jersey pockets. Started the ride at maybe 45 degrees; finished at 75+ degrees. And we're so dry in California the hills look like a moonscape.

Well folks, we went on our 2nd ride together today( wife and I ). It was in the low 80's here in So. CA. She loved it. In fact she said don't think of selling the bike.. We doubled our time in the saddles and we ventured out into more vehicular traffic streets without any complaints or worries. I made a height adjustment on the stoker handle bars, we wore proper riding gear ( shorts and gloves ) this time. She's looking forward to the next ride.

Sunday - 20 km neighbourhood ride + good workout on the outdoor fitness equipment. It was a chilly 16C out there, so I had to bundle up a bit!

Come on Jake, plenty good days left. Take today for example...31F when I left my house today. Soon thereafter, I rode through the first snow shower of the ride, got a flat, and realized one of my bottles had started to freeze. It was great. Did I mention the steadily building SW wind, which was probably blowing 20 MPH by the time I got home? It was so nice, I treated myself to 46 miles.

Thanks, I'm feeling pretty good about it.

79 miles yesterday, 42 today and 30 trainer miles earlier in the week. Puts me at 150 mi for the week. One more week of big miles then I'm coasting home.

Saturday:
31 mile group ride
25 mile solo

Temperature ranged between 40 and 48 degrees f. Coldest I've ever ridden and I wore one of everything I own and was "reasonably" comfortable...very untypical weather for central Florida. Really enjoyed the 101 degree hot tub after the ride!

29 miles today. It was a struggle to get on the bike; it was hard to find the motivation, but I finally got out the door.

Then, to top it off, I totally cracked with about 4 miles to go. Didn't feel all that great from the get go, so I figured I'd just do an out and back and see how I felt after a bit. For the first time in a long time, I ate everything I had with me, and it was still just barely enough to get back...with that said, I loved it.

51 miles Saturday in a fast group bunch. Crashed hard, at around 46miiles, helmet cracked, shoulder, knee, elbow bruises, nothing broken. Was so ready to go out for a recovery ride on sunday only to find out I have no helmet.
