Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We have some crazy winds going on right now here in Illinois...high 20's sustained gusting at nearly 50mph. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be -4 with winds from the NE at 43mph. I wonder what the windchill will be, that's freaking crazy. Right now the temp is 15 with a windchill of -4...LOL...

Meh, we get those out here at least a few times a month. Our wind is so bad they actually have a name for it; Santa Ana. I believe it means 'wind from the devil' but I doubt anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.

Regardless, its not the wind that annoys us, but the wind while going up one of our many beyond category climbs

Twin cities has the same winds tonight, dropping to -21f. It sucks. The current advisory says wind chills of -45f. If it gets any colder they'll be able to shut the nitrogen distillers off at work and just scoop LN up in buckets from the sidewalk.

Man, it was 73 deg here today in the Bay Area and the breeze was hardly sufficient for cooling. But I had a big glass of mint lemonade when I got home and it really hit the spot.

We get 70 MPH gusts in my little corner of Southern California. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I readily accept that Kansas is much worse for cycling than California, high winds might not be the primary reason.

This baby was rolling on the tarmac just fine today in 72f weather, no wind, though it was a little chilly going out this morning, like 50f. Been like this all month in Norcal, we just decided to skip winter I guess. Record setting temps. in SoCal I hear. I've gotten so much riding in this month, it's gotten boring.

If you are coming to California, bring your own water.

Seems like the freezing temps are more of a problem than the wind currently in most of the country. It was kind of windy here in So Cal today and chilly along the coast (my Garmin said mid 50's.) I got about 90 miles of riding in this weekend

It was beautiful today around the bay, mid 70's and winds must have been 2 or 3 mph. I am just hoping we have enough water to fill our water bottles this summer. I am not sure I could ride in 40 mph winds, I hope I never have to find out. Chuck

My parents are from Kansas. My dad says Kansas is a great place to be... from.
He also un-fondly recalls how during basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, he was chest deep in mud and had sand blowing in his eyes.
He always finishes the story with, "only in Kansas!"

I am so fortunate the romance of North Beach and the Beat Generation called to him and he took his bride, from Eudora, Kansas to San Francisco, where I was born.

Holler when you go up a hill. And no, overpasses don't count.

Wind. Pfft.

Had to wear sunscreen this weekend, so my farmer tan wouldn't turn into a farmer burn. It really wasn't windy around LA / Griffith Park.

It has been incredibly windy since we moved to Tasmania ... several days have been in excess of 100 km/h (including one day when we rode 50 km).

Most days have winds in the 30-40 km/h range in the afternoon, and today was gusting to 52 km/h. Nothing particularly unusual.

Can you even move forward on a bike into a 50mph headwind? I'll have to wait for the next hurricane to try out riding in that kind of wind.

Your parents are wise folks. Outstanding example of voting with one's feet.
