Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wedges (saddle bags)

IM in the market for a new saddle bag (wedge) I have seen a couple but I am not sure which ones are good. I want to put possibly a spare tube, tools (multi tool and tire tools) a phone, clif bar, and money.

Which one for a good price fitws my need. Should i be looking at a speed wedge or one of those mini bags? or like a small size?

Thanks a BUNCH!

A small size won't fit a spare tube, tools, a phone, clif bar, and money. Best thing to do is to go to a bike shop and look at the bags. It's hard to tell the size of bags when you're looking at it online (like nashbar). If you go to a shop, you can at least try it out by trying to fit everything in it.

I am using a medium Topeak aero wedge with quick release. It is awesome. It has plenty of room for a tube, co2 inflator, extra cartridges, tools and my phone. What I really like about it is that it goes on and off my saddle in just a second. This allows me to easily but my bike on a repair stand.

Here is a link to it.

So probalby a micro wedge would work https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...estore_ID=294# or https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...cfm?sku=19947#

I like to carry my cell phone in my jersey pocket so that I can get to it on the fly. This is useful in cases where you are being harrassed and it sends a strong message to the perp when you put that phone to your ear. This way I have a micro size bag for the six items mentioned in the other post. I also carry all food items in my jersey pockets.

I don't usually use my wedge if i have my jersey on but if not and i need to carry stuff i have a pedros blowout bag that works great. It looks nice and it fits quite a bit of stuff. It's made from bike tubes so it's pretty durable and light. most LBS carry them.

There is a lot of great info on Bikesport's site. It has been a great source for me.They also have excellent product reviews, training and equipment information, and some editorials. They are a great shop, and a pleasure to deal with. I'll post the link to the homepage just in case you are interested.

I use the Trek QR , I've installed 2 clips on both of my bikes, so I just interchange them.
Previously I had used one with a Velcro strap, but it felt off after riding over rough pavement. Whatever you buy don't let it be Velcro, it'll fall off overtime, once the Velcro wear off.

The larger (around $18) Pedros Bag is great. Check it out:

That's why cycling jerseys are equipped with rear pockets. My Specialized mini wedge carries a substantial multi-tool. A nice sized combination CO2 and standard pump, spare tire, patches, money, expandable tire iron. Bars, gu, and that kind of stuff goes in my jersey pocket should I even decide to carry them.

Here's what I carry and how I carry it:

Topeak Master Blaster II, Tube, any food I may bring: Jersey Pockets

Tire levers, ID (in case of the worst), a few bucks, keys, small mini tool: in my Trans It Micro Wedge
about like this one https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=2310

I also have a larger Trek wedge lying around that I use if necessary, but it rarely seems to be; the little one always seems to hold everything.

Yeah, the only thing I would add to the Michigan article is a small mini-tool (allen wrenchs etc) ... that should fit in any micro wedge and I have on occassion needed them to tighten something.

I use the Topeak Aero Wedge in size small and am able to carry quite a bit of stuff. I don't keep my CO2 cartridges in there though (those mount to holders on the sides of my waterbottle cage) and my phone goes into my jersey pockets along with a few other things. See this post for a complete description of what I carry and where. Here's an excerpt detailing what's in my seatbag.

I can fit quite a bit in my seat pack.. 2 road tubes, patch kit, park boot, alien hummer tool - spoke wrench, co2 pump + 1 extra cartridge and 2 tire irons..

Can't beat this price. 1 for 6.00 or 2 for 10.00

If you are willing to spend $90, the Rivendell Baggins Banana Bag will last well into your retro grouch stage. It is pretty, holds a lot and smells good.

Been there... done that. It's a yard sale. I no longer keep things that poke in my pockets. I once went down while MTBing with a set of keys in my front hip pocket of my baggies. That was a big mistake.
