Diablo is an excellent benchmark climb. It's a very steady 6% to the top (excluding the brutal last 200m), drivers are fairly accustomed to seeing riders, and everyone in NorCal knows it. As rm-rf pointed out, 1hr works out to a tidy 1000vam. And that takes just about 4 w/kg for 60'. Which is pretty damn good.

Ride to the top and note the time. That's your benchmark. Then start trying to knock a minute off every time up. If you can do it in an hour, you can win a t-shirt.
