anyone ever start their own riding club?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

anyone ever start their own riding club?

Just curious, I actually created one, via a wordpress blog, as a way to find people to ride with in my area if they're doing a search, we'll see if anyone bites. There's actually a good selection of group rides in the region here, but we're currently a one car family, which is typically used by my wife, so I can't drive myself out to where the meet ups are, and I suppose the ironic part is that I think those group rides are too far to bike to (they're all probably a 30min drive from my location). Anyway, just wanted to see what others' experiences are with this sort of thing, if any.

I have thought about it, there is a group in my area but their ride times do not fit in my schedule. I would be interested in hearing how things go for you

I have started one for the upcoming season. Tired of my friends flaking out.

Strava has a funcution where you can make clubs. Pretty simple and folks will contact you to join or you can join them.

good to know, thanks for the heads up! I only kind of use strava, so I haven't really explored it in depth, so much appreciated

I belong to several bike clubs that are hosted on meetup.com. In all cases, it started with one or two people wanting to post rides for friends and then they grew out of that. Meetup will allow you to keep a club open to anyone or else you can accept/deny a request to join. There is a cost (check meetup.com for details) but you end up with a good web site to organize rides including Android & iPhone apps. So that would give you a backbone for organizing the club.

But then the organizers need to be sure to put in the effort to have good ride events, communication with club members, etc.

I'm a member of two informal clubs - one uses meetup the other Facebook. The meetup is a great tool for organizing rides.

With that said, if you have not thought about it, you might want to ensure that you have adequate insurance if you are organizing group rides. People can become litigious over the smallest of issues and you could be found liable as a group leader.

The League of American Bicyclists is where most clubs get their insurance. Rates make it worth the membership fee.
