Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speaking of first gigs, I landed my first paid gig today, May 25th. I should make at least $80. Maybe even $100.

I am keeping my day job. Not for nothing, that's more money than I ever made racing my stupid bicycle, dressed up like some pathetic velo superhero dork.

My brain aches from a strange day at work, where nothing turned out to be what is was supposed to be.

Including a dog with a broken penis (yes, dogs have a bone in their penis, and this dog's is broken, I have no idea why, but it's clearly something that happened years ago, not an active problem), which had nothing to do with anything but the guy wouldn't stop asking me about it. To the extent that I had to get a little short with him to get him to listen to the results of his dog's MRI & spinal tap. "Stop thinking about the penis! The penis is not the problem!"

Plus multiple other things that were complicated, weird or just plain dreadful luck.

Mine was REM, just before their first album came out. What maybe 1983 or 84? In a rollerrink, I kid you not.

My first concert was the Fixx. My brother's first was Pink Floyd. I was robbed.

However, as a slight payback, I did see my other brother get in a fisticuff with the Dead Milkmen.

Nice, Herbie.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Beach Boys opened for them.

Pink Floyd was my first, too, but we're talking Division Bell tour, not something cooler (I was still in high school).

You were indeed robbed.

Wish You Were Here is my tied-for favorite album. Trouble is when I play it, I expect everyone to sit around & listen to it, and at a decent volume too. Of course start to finish in its entirety. No talking or doing something else. Except driving, that's ok. Thankfully Mr. H gets it, I might not have married him if he did not.

My next concerts were at Orchard Park (Sting opening for the Dead, and Steve Miller Band for the Dead). I went to both of those for the opening, and heard a grand total of 4 Dead tunes.

Actually, those were 3 and 4. Warren Zevon was #2 , in a smallish venue. I would have preferred that as #1 . I wouldn't have felt robbed then.
