Addiction XXXIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm sorry CC didn't work out, Heathpack. Worth a shot. If you like, I can certainly try and get some info from the two shops listed here that deal with BMC.

I might take you up on that but don't go to any trouble yet. LBS who ordered the seatpost for us was in touch with BMC yesterday. Assured us they would call before close of business yesterday to let us know status. Of course, no call, this is 100% par for the course with this shop.

Heres how I predict this will go down (based on the bar experience): we will call today when they open. Whoever we talk to will know nothing, will take a message. No one will call us back. So we will call before they close. They will act like we are crazy high-maintenance people, say its too late to get in touch with BMC. And this exact scenario will be replicated on Monday.

I ordered something from Competitive Cyclist the other day. Never thought that would happen again. But surprise, surprise, they had the best price. By a considerable margin (Pearl Izumi Don't Flatten Me Yellow Elite Barrier windshell, my old one bit the dust).

They are part of the same bunch with Backcountry/Bonktown/Chainlove. It seems to have taken a bit of time, but their prices are definitely more competitive (unintentional pun).

Nice. Well, I'm intrigued, as it says it's a 27.2, and that's one of the "normal" sizes. So, I'll likely call to satisfy my own curiosity, and let you know what I find.

...I think that the CF seat post I took out of that Specialized is a 27.2. You can have it if you want it, I will never use it.

Let me know if and when you think you have had enough fun with your LBS epic adventure, as it sounds like it's shaping
up into one of those "stories", and my own feeling is that when life gives you material, you ought to see where it goes.

I can remember I was thrilled to discover that the seat post diameter I needed to replace was an easily available, standard
diameter that's been around for years. How sad is that ?

Edit: I have to check the offset, the replacement is zero offset, but I don't remember what the original was. It's over at the shop.
Anyway, it probably would not yield similar satisfaction to finally bending the forces of evil to your implacable will.

Maybe I'll resume looking over their jerseys now. In the past they've been way too expensive for my tastes . . . for some reason my brain refuses to compute anything over $75 for a poly garment, no matter how slick the design or hi-tech the fabric.

Cross-headwind for my ride home. Likely too much work for what may be considered openers. I'm really getting tired of this crap.

Ok so here's the latest on the seat post.

Called LBS. Talked to owner of shop who had talked to BMC. Says there is no 0mm offset post, just 3mm. And BMC only has red & black seat posts right now. (My bike is white & black, not a stitch of red on it.)

Ask LBS owner if he knew how long it would take to get black & white seat post. He said he would have to call BMC and call me back.

I protested about the "call me back" idea, since that never really happens. Finally wheedled out of him the cell number of the BMC rep.

Talked to the BMC rep, they are having problems with small parts supply right now. To get a black & white seat post now, they'll have to find a whole bike somewhere, get their hands on it, take the seat post off and ship it to LBS who can then ship it to me.

I am confused about that b/c the bike comes with an 18mm offset post, so I'm not sure where they're going to find a bike with a 3mm post. Whatever I guess that is their problem. I did get him to agree that they could MAYBE ship the seat post directly to me rather than to LBS.

So BMC is going to search for a bike to cannabalize. In the meantime @3alarmer, if you actually have a carbon post with appropriate offset, I might take you up on our offer and tell BMC to forget it.

This is a fabulous bike, I have to remind myself that it actually is worth all this aggravation.

...I'll go look and post a photo for you later on today.

You do know you can just buy a Kalloy zero offset 27.2 post in black anodized aluminum alloy, right ?

Amazon.com: Kalloy Seatpost, 400mm x 27.2mm, Black: Sports & Outdoors

Or you can follow the crowd here and go with a Thompson.

That's... disconcerting. I mean, either someone's bull****ting you or they have some serious infrastructure problems - neither is pleasant.
