Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Di2 owners, battery status indicator light

So looked and found lots of threads that mostly degenerated into, it's the end of cycling as we know it with electronic shifting. so..............I wanted to start a new thread.

I've got a couple friends who have Di2 and charging seems to be very rarely needed, ie well over 1k miles.

I'm approaching 1k on my new bike which has Di2. My shop gave me the rundown on the status light. I can't recall the specifics and referred to the manual without finding it.

So it's my understanding:

fully charged is solid green when you touch the gear lever
flashing green?
does it then progress to red light flashing, (is this the stage where you have approx 200-300 miles left before battery is dead)

then red light solid.

I check it each time before a ride but would just like to know, that's why I'm going to wait until I get the red the first time before I charge it.

This is the 9070 Di2

Thanks guys!
Chris

100% is green for 2 seconds

50% flashes green 5 times

25% is red for 2 seconds

0% flashes red 5 times

Front derailleur quits working first, then you have a few shifts left in the rear.

Exc. That's exactly what I needed to know, glad too as I had the red backwards. I'm approaching 1k miles and am getting the green flash so ways to go, probably just go ahead and charge when it hits red.

Thanks again!

Out of my own curiosity does it hurt to charge any time the opportunity arises (does it lower battery life)? I've never taken mine down that low but just plug it in every now and again (also 9070)

Back in the old days I know the niCad batteries would get a memory if you recharge them before they're down below a certain degree of discharge state. I don't think that applies anymore, but just a habit I guess.

Unfortunately it appears the lithium ion batteries do get a memory if recharged before complete discharge.

Luckily the effect is very minor...

The effect is in fact tiny: the relative deviation in voltage is just a few parts per thousand.

I have the original Di2 on one bike. The battery life is only OK (I guess I shift too much.) The main problem is the flashing pattern seems off. Several times now when it's gone to flashing green I have WAY less than 50% battery life left. Twice when I started a century ride with flashing green, the battery went to RD-only mode before the ride was over. Now I charge it up at the first sign of flashing green.

I have Ultegra Di2 on another bike and haven't seen that issue.

maybe you've got a bad battery or perhaps it's the memory issue?

I'm at a 1000 miles (I think I shift a fair amount) and still in the flashing green stage. My friend has earlier Di2 and I think he got around 1500 miles between charges.

I've also got the first generation of Di2 and it seems to me like the flashing green does in fact go to red pretty quick, although I've never really tracked those miles. I get about 1,700 miles from full charge to an absolutely dead charge (don't ask me how I know - but let's just say I got to pedal home, up hill, in the big chain ring). So now I also re-charge every time the indicator light starts to flash green, which has been a little after the thousand mile mark.

Yeah, most likely a bad battery. I also live in NoVa so I imagine our rides are similar. I easily get 1,500 miles between charges

The battery life is OK. It's just the timing of the light that seems off. Maybe it's the sensor that detects the battery level rather than the battery itself. I just try to keep the battery topped off now.
