    Would you replace this tire, given this photo?

    Hello 41,

    Quick question: I recently noticed a ~.5 inch cut in my rear tire, to the side of the tread. I'm currently running Schwalbe Luganos. I usually replace my tires when the treads start to really flatten out; around 3000 miles or so for the rear. I've been riding this rear tire for probably about 2000 miles, and it looks as they otherwise have a fair bit of life left.

    However, given the photo of this cut, would anyone recommend replacing the tire prematurely? I think I can see some cords, but the tire doesn't seem to be bulging at all.photo (22).jpg

    You already put 2000 miles on them, and they're $20-25 a tire...I would just replace them and not have to worry about it.

    put duct tape on the inside back of the cuts and go for ,3000 miles.

    yep. You've got about $7-$8 of value remaining. You can patch or try a boot. But if it doesn't hold up you may not make it home with a big rupture. Is the chance worth $8?
    You're just trying to start an argument to show how smart you are.

    I'd boot it long enough to get home. Then it would be replaced.

    I got a similar cut in a tire with 200 miles on it. Made me sad, but it went in the bin.

    I like starting spring with new tires, brakes, handle bar tape, and chain. Is every part I replace always completely as worn out as it could possibly be? No. But sometimes... I find debris ground into a brake pad, or a chain more worn than I had thought (by measuring while on the bike), even a sliver of something embedded deep in a tire.

    It's nice to know as the snow melts and I start my season.... that the bicycle is as ready to ride as I am. If I only have a couple or three hours of decent cycling time.... I won't be spending that time buying and installing new parts.

    This. If you've got 2000 miles out of a $20 tyre you've paid $0.01 per mile.

    I tried to squeeze maximum possible value out of a Schwalbe Durano Plus tyre that had lots of the blue strip showing. It didn't end well. Luckily when the tyre failed catastrophically I only had a couple of miles to walk home, and wasn't on a fast descent or anything. I won't be doing that again...

    You could tape it, boot it, glue it but why go for a ride knowing you have a potential flat just waiting to happen? Would you want to go on a group ride, knowing you have a flat waiting, or go on a century knowing you have a flat waiting to happen? Point is, that odds are against you and you have a real good chance of flatting with a tire in that condition. I know it's always a chance to flat even with a new tire, but why ride a tire with greater odds of flatting when you could ride with a new or better tire with peace of mine? JMHO

    I make a practice of replacing any damaged part that a) could catastrophically fail and cause me to hit the ground at 30+, and b) costs (in your case) $25 to replace...

    I would ride that tire as is. No boot, no glue. I'd just take a look at it once in a while to make sure it still looked the same and didn't show any signs failing.
    Ride more. Fret less.

    Thanks for the feedback. Ended up putting on a new tire before riding today; luckily I noticed this a week ago and already had a spare on hand.
