Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter training locations

I just got back from a week of training in san deigo which was amazing and now trying to think of a location for next year. I would go 1st week in march and looking for a place that has good weather and hills/mountains I could train in. I also would be going with my fiancee, so I need a place that has activities for us to do after I bike in the early morning. San Diego worked well because of all the beaches, sun, and so many things to do which helped keep her happy. Any suggestions?

Austin . The hills aren't large but they're constant, and Austin is a great place (live music capitol of the world!)

The weather this spring has been unusually cold, but you're typically riding in shorts and no jacket by March, when the highs are in the 70s.

Cheers

Tucson: huge climbs, very fast group rides, races at that time of the year, lots of great dining options, amazing hikes, beautiful sunsets, relatively low cost...

It's gonna be hard to beat Southern California.

Try Malibu next year. Climbs galore, and you can also drive out to Mt Baldy or Angels Crest Highway to do a long climb if you want. There's hollywood, beaches, plays, night clubs, fine dining, museums, Griffith Observatory, Long Beach Aquarium, etc to do while you're here. If you come earlier in the winter (like January ) you'll be out on the road with Pro teams doing their winter training camps.

Austin weather is iffy to plan a cycling vacation around IMO, having lived there for 27 years, and it doesn't compare to the riding here.

The notable climb at the edge of town is Lemmon: starts at 2700 ft, climbs to over 9000 ft in about 26 miles. Very low traffic, esp. on a weekday. Then there is Kitt Peak which is about a 4000 ft climb over 12 miles and Mt Graham (State HC Champs held here) which is about 9000ft climbing over 20 miles. Kitt Peak and Mt Graham are out of town, traffic is almost nonexistent.

Cops are not a real issue here, I don't know where that came from. And a lot less traffic and traffic lights than SoCA. I live in mid town just north of the uni and can ride 17 miles to the base of Lemmon and have only one stop light. I'm certainly biased but I have lived in SoCA, Orange County.

That's exactly what I was thinking. My training "vacation" later this month is going to be a week of pain in the mountains of north Georgia sharing a house with like 20 other dudes, eating crappy spaghetti.

Heading to Kauai next week. Highest climb is 3500 ft to Waimea Canyon, but hey, I'm on vacation.

here in San Francisco, we've got Mt Tamalpais, Mt. Hamilton, and Mt. Diablo (the queen stage of 2013 Tour of California). of course, it's not much of a tourist destination.

the temps have been creeping into the low 70's lately, and it's dry... very very dry. too dry.

No, but I laughed at your comment, because it's very close except for the crappy spaghetti part. This is more like George Jefferson's cycling camp.

If international is an option ... Australia's summer is when you all are having winter. It's early autumn here right now and we just had a 32C day.

If I hopped on a bicycle right now, within about 30 minutes I could be halfway up a mountain or sitting on one of several beaches.

(Of course it's night right now so I'm not inclined to hop on a bicycle just now. )

Tucson easily outshines SoCal on several fronts... IMHO

Although our recent trip was about serious hiking, the area is obviously bike riders joy in the winter.

Be aware that on Friday the Tucson Bicycle Classic starts and the TT is right out past Gates Pass. So there will be more traffic than normal. Also, you may want to check out the Shootout Saturday morning for a fast group ride though most will be racing the TBC.
