Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Men's ELITE Softshell Jacket - Pearl Izumi

Got the toe covers and a nice riding jacket [first cycling].

40 years of motorcycles never had this.

Should be warm.

Pearl Izumi stuff and i get along.

I think their jerseys and such are great. I have two or three.
Bought some Pearl Izumi AmFIB Neoprene Cycling Cold Weather Shoe Covers on eBay last month and they have been great. $25 shipped, cannot beat that.

I wear toe covers too... but always wondered why we didn't just put on a plastic bag over the socks and be done. They do pretty much the same thing.

I have actually tried this in a pinch, and they honestly don't work well. My guess is that the shoe cover helps the shoe become part of the insulation layer, so you have sock, air gap, then shoe, then impermeable layer.

Same experience. I'd say that tape a good layer of duct tape on the toe to block the air holes would do the trick, but nobody wants to tape up a good pair of cycling shoes.

So plastic bag OUTSIDE would work, but that would be fugly and fredly.

Plastic bag outside shoes was a common solution back in the day especially for tourers in wet climates. It was always a compromise and never really worked well, and I can only assume disappeared as clipless pedals became the norm and tech improved in terms of touring/mtb shoe warmth and waterproofing.

+1.

I also had problems with the wrinkles from the bag causing pressure points.

I recently went to one of the bike shops in my area to buy toe covers, but they didn't have any in stock. Then kind of decided that the toe cover is somewhat of a specialized item. 95% of the time if a toe cover is necessary, a full shoe cover will be just fine. Still, they're cheap enough that having them is never a bad thing.
