Brooks B17 came with loose tension pin

I got a Brooks B17 a few months back and noticed the tension pin was completely loose upon taking it out of the box. I've ridden Brooks before and know that they start out as being too stiff. This B17 was saggy right out of the box(I was riding on the rails) so I tensioned it conservatively and went on my way. Since then I have yet to find that sweet spot, I constantly go back and forth between feeling like its too tight or too loose - always agreeing that it's simply uncomfortable.

Do any of you well informed riders know what a good base tension would be? I want to make sure I'm at least in the ballpark and not being too conservative or too liberal with my initial adjustment. For example.. how much play should there be when I push down on the center of the saddle from the top? How can I tell if I'm even close?

if it were me, i would snug it up so it wouldn't come loose or rattle, then forget about it.

What B17 do you have? The leather tops on my special and select are very taught, barely able to push down on the leather.

The leather on the standard is thinner than the special and select models, but still it should be rather firm and no sag. It will start to sag slightly as you ride it, but it should not be anywhere near hammock-like.
