6-7 speed crank compatibility with a 10-speed build?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

6-7 speed crank compatibility with a 10-speed build?

I hope to use a pair of 6-7 speed vintage Sugino-manufactured cranks in a Campy 10-speed build with Ergo shifting. I intend to use modern, ramped and pinned 10-speed TA rings, compact, 50-34.

Do I need to reduce the spacing between the rings? I'd very much like to accomplish transparent, factory-equivalent performance. Will a 10-speed chain drop between the rings if I don't reduce the spacing? If I do need to thin the spacers, what is my target spacing? Yes, I am doing this for a classic appearance. The cranks are Specialized "flag" style, and the build is a Della Santa.

Thanks for any insight.

I have used a 7 speed crankset (Shimano 600 Tri-Color) on a 9 speed (Dura Ace 7700) drivetrain successfully. I'm not sure if the shifting is optimal though.

I would go with a Dura Ace 7700 9-speed crankset if I were you, since you wanted to keep the classic look. It will work perfectly with a 10 speed drivetrain.

think you need new chainrings since the roller width and thus the inner link side plates are closer together .

on 10 speed chains.

I like the simple approach, good thinking, but I don't see the 7700 being available in a 110 compact, only in a full-sized crank? (Plus, I have the arms, but that doesn't mean I absolutely have to use them.)

Thx
