This is why I stay off MUP's and only ride around on all-women college campuses.

Some MUPs can be dangerous. Southern California had a rash of attacks on bike trails. Gang members would stake them out and look for a cyclist riding alone, then jump them and steal their bike, cell phone, and anything else of value.

Here where I live, the MUP's are clearly marked with painted lanes that not only say "Bikes" and "Peds," they also have symbols (footprints and a bike stencil). While most people stay in their designated lanes, there are always clueless walkers who stroll down the middle of the bike lane, and either appear annoyed or startled when bikes have to swerve to avoid them.

The problem is that if he admitted to 18 he was probably doing 22 or more. We're not hearing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Frankly, my suspicions arise right away when I hear a sob story.
So Mr. Jackal, you going to come back and explain yourself, or are you content to just toss a grenade in the room?

FWIW, I've been yelled at for "going too fast" on a MUP when I was going about 13 mph. And I have a speedometer.
Lots of MUPpets are totally clueless about accurate speeds.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I was riding on the trail on Sunday afternoon, and was physically attacked by a pedestrian.
He was walking right in the middle of the bike trail, and as I was riding by (at 18 mph) this perpetrator kicked me in the thigh, presumably to knock me off of my bike. I was completely stunned. I am fine, besides some bruising, but it could have been worse, especially if I had caught him.
He ran off, and I could probably have caught him, but its probably good I didn't.
What would you have done?
Long story short, be careful out there.

I passed this shifty looking guy on the bridge one day at low speed and signalled with my bell and an "on your left" with no incident but stopped a little ways ahead to adjust something on my bike and in this time the guy caught up.
I have good peripheral vision and good situational awareness and when he was 8-10 feet away he picked up his pace (my spidey sense went off at this point) and he then tried to round kick me in the head.
They had to carry him off the bridge.

He obviously felt his speed was a factor in the incident otherwise there would be no need to mention it at all. So in that situation, looking for sympathy from the masses, he's going to do what, exaggerate his speed higher?

I would have carefully edited my video, extracting, if possible, the clearest still of buttheads face, then go to the cops.
There is a trend lead by some bike haters to rebrand Bike Trails as MUP's. They are bike trails. I am totally cool with peds using the Bike Trails as long as they treat them as Bike trails. Yesterdays commute was 30 miles, about ten on Bike Trails. I had three incidents involving self absorbed peds treating the Bike Trails as anything but.
There was the woman pushing a stroller ahead of me who did an abrupt u-turn in front of me, pushing the stroller to block the entire path. I had slowed, and shouted to look out. This caused her to angrily rip out her ear buds and shout "What did you say to me?"
There was the woman walking along the right side of the path with a trip wire attached to a dog sniffing along the left side. I had to come to a complete stop for that one, as she didn't hear mo over her ear buds until I was right on top of them.
Then there were the two guys with a large pack of unleashed Labrador retrievers playing fetch in the middle of the Bike Trail right after I had emerged from a blind tunnel. There was another roadie coming from the opposite direction. Of course it was the dog owners who were the most bent.
Then there is the part where the Bike Trail passes the offices of Blizard Entertainment, makers of World of Warcraft, who treat it as an open air conference room and brainstorming salon. Five people walking abreast, half texting, the other half on the phone.

I don't think anyone is saying the pedestrian was right to kick him. But as Machka pointed out, it seems odd to buzzing a pedestrian at 18mph, close enough that the ped can spin on you and leg whip you.
The issue some of us have with the OP, is what were you doing passing a pedestrian on a MUP at 18mph in close enough proximity that he kick you?

If you come on the internet whining about some offense towards you, more than likely you're going to downplay your own culpability somewhere along the line. In the situation as he described, odds are he was going too fast and that's why he got the response he did.
He obviously felt his speed was a factor in the incident otherwise there would be no need to mention it at all. So in that situation, looking for sympathy from the masses, he's going to do what, exaggerate his speed higher?

On a related note, why do peds with dogs very frequently unleash the dogs when the trail is in fact placarded(when isn't it?) then look like me coming by as a chase target is a huge surprise?

Ride by them with an outlandishly large sword and yell in olde-tyme English that they should-st watcheth thine path!

Wow, this is a tough crowd. I love how people jump to conclusions and rant and rave about speed limits and my motives. I find it funny.
First of all, I do speed on the bike trail. The 15 MPH limit is completely ridiculous. We can have a discussion about that if you want, but it is a separate topic. With that said, I always slow down for peds, and always give a wide berth. Even with people that are being total jerks and taking the whole trail I am patient with. When I see little kids on the trail I slow WAY down to make sure I don't run into them or vice-versa. Additionally, when the trail is really busy, I never go faster than what I can stop quickly for.
So, This was in Sacramento, and I was on the American River Bike Trail, north. It was in one of the worst areas of town, basically Del Paso Heights (I know that was my problem). The guy was walking toward me, and was walking directly on the yellow line (right in the middle of the trail). He was in his late teens or early twenties. When I saw him I stopped peddling, moved over as far right as I could go, and he just reached out and kicked me. He was looking right at me the whole time. He never said a word. There was no one else around that was in visual or audible range. I had a few choice words that I yelled while he was running away. I did chase him for a bit, but decided it wasn't worth being thrown in jail for.
For you guys that talk about speeding, I hear you. Like I said before, I try to be courteous to the people around me. I only speed when I feel it is safe. However, you just don't physically attack someone just because you think they are going too fast, on the bike trail, on the freeway, or anywhere else for that matter.
However, that isn't what this punk was doing. He was either trying to steal something, or just trying to hurt someone. It would not have mattered if I was going 5 or 25.
