Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After a short time cycling (18 months back) I bought a Trek 1.9 frameset in 60cm and built it with a DA7800 groupset. After I'd finished and had ridden it a bit, I realised it was a tad too big:-

Then I found and built-up a used 2009 Defy2 frameset:-

Currently sitting on my 2012 CAAD10 Team frameset - which is where it'll stay!

cheers

I do all my own work and only have a few bicycles that I received complete while the rest have been put together from the frame up and most have hand built wheels.

This also required the use of a torch... I still have a custom stem in the works and also hand built the wheels and built up the custom freewheel.

It is a radically customized Raleigh 20... I kept the main frame but replaced the rear triangle, added cable guides, brake bosses, and bottle braze ons and built the custom fork.

We did the custom powder in our shop as well.

I have taken it on moderately paced road rides in a more stripped down form with racing slicks and had no problem keeping up but really designed it for touring and travel as it will break down and fit in a suitcase.

that's quite impressive. how do the 20" wheels ride compared to a 27" or 700c? notice any efficiency problems?

The ride quality is very good and the bike will tick along at 30 kmh all day on the Marathons (1.5 inch) and is faster on racing slicks... the ride quality is pretty close to my Moulton which rolls on 17 inch tyres but that bike has a full suspension to offset the harsher ride of smaller wheels and high pressure tyres.

It does not get much better than the Moulton either... few bikes combine ride quality and performance like these do and 20 inch wheels seem to be that point where any smaller requires some suspension / dampers.

The 20 is one of my most ridden bicycles and for a time it was seeing 500 + km a week... it is always fun to catch people on road bicycles and have them do a double take when they see these small wheels speeding along. The cartridge bearings hubs I used are also incredibly smooth and the bars can be dropped for a more aggressive riding position if desired.

Smaller wheeled bicycles have really come into their own and improvements in tyre technology have made the most difference... you can get the same racing tyres for a 20 inch wheel as you can a 700c and these are 40% lighter and have an aero profile that is only 60% of a full sized wheel.

I have a new wheelset in the works for my 20... will be going to a lighter 28 spoke rim (more than strong enough on a small wheel) and a 9 speed cassette which will allow for a slightly higher top gear, the current wheels will be going into another custom 20 build.

Just because.

Traded away the frame to a fellow in Montreal for some useful bike parts.

Rescued frame, fork and headset from the bike co-op.

Wanted a single speed winter ride.
