Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My C50 was due by the end of February, but I was just told it will be another 3-4 weeks from now, mid March.

I've got a few friends that work at shops...and they all hate colnagos. apparently, all of the threads are extremely sloppy, you must chase and face everything. one of these guys was given an assignment at his shop to build a colnago "with the best" according to the customer. so he got to pick out all sorts of cool parts and whatnot, but he had never assembled a colnago. much to his surprise, he actually had to retap the rear derailleur hanger, chase the BB threads, he even had to chase the threads of the barrel adjusters on the downtube.

for such expensive bikes, you'd think that more care would be put into them in the factory.

Its probably cause they are entirely hand made, aren't they. There are tons of similar stories about Ferraris, which are also hand made. There are some aspects that a robot can do better time after time than a human. Actually, there are a lot but that doesn't make hand-made inferior.

I'm also just assuming Colnagos are entirely hand made, if not - then you're right.

Not true. I've assembled 4 Colnago frames over the past several years. I simply butter the threads with anti-seize compound. After that, threading in the bottom bracket is as silky smooth as turning a precision sealed bearing - you know the feeling, right? I have always checked the head-tube and bottom bracket facing - always perfectly parallel.

I have never worked on a Colnago that has been less then flawless. I'm a customer for life. Plus, it doesn't hurt either that Ernesto's size 56cm fits me like a glove.

I have a C40 with a brake cable stop rivetted in backwards. Great QC. That should change now that they have announced that all of their production for mid and low range frames has been moved to China!

A-team in Taiwan - more specifically giant.

As for the comments about hand made... remember - high school graduates or high school dropouts are pretty much the same everywhere, whether you're in Italy, United States or Taiwan. The question comes to whether the company has the necessary experience and incenstive to maintain high quality control standards. Not where it is made. Plus - with lug construction, what is handmade? Does it count if it is a hydrolic press that applies the pressure to join a lug and tube together after the high school graduate applies the glue? Or do you want him to press it with his uneven hands personally?

If you're talking about monoscoque construction - then it is pretty much just hand laid in the mold - and goes into the pressure cooker. Where's the "craftsman" ?

ps
nice bikes - not a fan of Colnago because it is a "Colnago" (just a name to me). But the paintjobs look nice on some of them.
