Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So here is my main screen of my Garmin 510. I am sure that everyone has their idea of what "need to know" is. So let me know what is solid, geek and/or missing.

All you need is power, HR zone, and elapsed time. That's it.

What's the purpose of that screen? There are multiple screens, right?

My interval screen: lap time, HR, cadence, 3-sec power, lap avg power.

Other screens have other purposes. The only reason you need time of day is to get yourself back by a certain time.

Elevation? Who cares?

What do you get out of knowing how far you've gone other than knowing how far you've gone?

Elevation to correct maps. (Geek)
I am a commuter also. I have multiple bikes and this screen is about being on time and past times on getting there. each bike has their own set up as far as meters are concerned. All have a logged miles on component page so I know how long the pieces have been in service.

I think knowing how long components have been utilized. One other thing endurance fitness.

I used to be like that, had multiple screens very similar to yours. I still have a couple but the ones I use 90% of the time now are pretty simple and easy to read.

Main Screen: 3sec power, avg power, total ascent, elapsed time, pwr zone (I ditched distance and HR on my main screen due to almost all my training being power or zone based now)

Screen for races: Elapsed time, Distance (I thought this was weird when it was first suggested to me, but now love it. Once I do some races where pacing myself will become important like a time trial I'll use the screen with power)

I still have a default screen that I just couldn't let go even though I don't use it much that includes, speed, cadence, power, elapsed time, HR, distance, and time of day (which is pretty much the only time I use it is to check the time).

Garmins are amazing data producers. And when you apply them with Strava or MMR you can find motivations through those numbers. I found I rode more just because I was learning the functionality.
Do you ever ride with the guy that says " I have 25 MPH what you do you have?" or something similar? And in the moment you go a fair amount of distance on that distraction. LOL You end up calibrating others ol school computers during rides

Rule #74 // V Meters or small computers only.
Forego the data and ride on feel; little compares to the pleasure of riding as hard as your mind will allow. Learn to read your body, meditate on Rule #5 , and learn to push yourself to your limit. Power meters, heart rate monitors and GPS are bulky, ugly and superflous. Any cycle computer, if deemed necessary, should be simple, small, mounted on the stem and wireless.

Ha! well unfortunately I don't get to ride with others much, but no doubt when I do we often compare info. Last year there was a group that was staying nearby and we ended up riding together for the week they were here. One of them happened to be in his mid 60's and on every climb we'd go back and forth over our HR, but that was mostly for fun. I do like the amount of info the Garmin can give, and I'd say originally I enjoyed scrolling screen to screen. But now I really like the info I get and then I look at other stuff after downloading, plus my eyes are getting worse so the fewer sections on a screen the better

When buying a Garmin you are supporting the team (it could be better than a full kit). No rule about that I see Hummmmm BTW Laughed my ass off on "THE RULES" thank you, I am reborn! Must go and meditate on rule 5.

There's a difference between having the data available after your ride and having it in front of you WHILE you ride. I'm guilty of over-display though, and one thing I like looking at that you don't have is the grade of the road I'm on, even though I could probably predict it more accurately than my garmin. Speed, cadence, HR and 3sec power are the only things I probably really care about, the rest is just nice to see. I also put "distance to next" on there when I'm riding a new route that I've uploaded.

True, not only is it zero, now it is REALLY zero relevance.

Lately i've been taking advantage of my 800's map/turn by turn ability and only have current speed and distance over the map. I do like having the ability to look at other stuff though.

main page and "climbing" page

Average lap power is also critical if you're trying to hit a target power number for an interval.
