The "you're too skinny" speech.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That isn't really true about swimmers struggling with the sport. There are many top level triathletes that used to be swimmers, and if you recall Lance was a damn good swimmer and triathlete before he went exclusively to the bike.

Whenever you are doing a sport, like triathlons, you need an amount of fat reserve or you will bonk since your body cannot generate the energy needed to perform from nothing. So it is either the food you take in, your fat, or your muscles that will be broken down.

And as far as the "swimmer" build is concerned, swimmers at top levels typically have long torsos and shorter legs, look at Phelps for a reference but obviously the shoulders are always very broad. But even within the sport itself there are many different builds that contribute to the success in different specialties.

I thought I'd only used it once. Not sure how I'm using it wrong tbh, I'm substantially bigger than I was. Worried I might start to get too fat for this sport =)

What size waist to your wear in pants? I'm a little heavier than you but 30's are a little big & have a hard time finding smaller items unless I order on-line.

Choices are abysmal for anyone with a less than 32" waist. To add insult to injury, men's sizing has gone the way of women where reported numbers are becoming inaccurate. Phrases like "relaxed fit" are euphemisms for "ignore reported sizing because the numbers don't reflect reality." Though race cut and athletic fit stuff is typically OK.

I sometimes look at the kids' stuff, but it looks so stupid (even compared to road cycling gear) there's no way in hell I can wear hardly any of it.

Definitely true. I am 168, the same weight I was when I graduated from HS in 1985, and I always wore a large T-shirt or polo shirt. Now a large is noticeably bigger.

I was at 235 when I started my current job. I'm at 192 today. I've found it easier to just lie and say "No, I'm not dieting anymore, happy with my weight!"

I work with a lot of 50+ women, and I get the "You're too skinny speech a lot." Anyone who sees me with my shirt off disagrees

Target weight is 165 pounds (I'm 6'2")

if my grandmother gives it, I just eat. from anyone else I tend to tune them out. I am a lot heavier than I look. I would actually like to be back at 180 that was when I swam and did Olympic squats on a regular basis. but now I am around 150 and 5'10 which seems to be a common thing around here.

I started high school 6' and ~140, at graduation I was 6'2 and ~160-170. During college and grad school (and beyond), I bloated up until last year I was at almost 240 (still 6'2). Lost ~50 lbs by Christmas of last year and had people telling me I'd lost too much weight and was sickly even though I was 20-30 pounds more than I was at the same height at the end of high school/beginning of college. Around Christmas/first of the year, I gained almost 10 pounds back on have been unsuccessfully trying to get it back off (and ideally lose another 10 pounds). People don't seem to understand that I'm still on the borderline of being overweight by BMI. I have a large frame and will probably never again be able to be underweight (shoulders/rib cage will always make me at minimum a 44), but I'd love to lose some more weight. Makes me feel good when people notice how much I've lost but I downplay it as much as possible because I'd love to lose some more. Losing the motivation be quite as strict about tracking my weight though.

I played football my freshman year of high school at 6' 215 then wrestled at 189 that winter with occasional drops to 171 class. So I knew I should have been skinnier given how easy I could drop that weight. After I got married I went up to 235 from 215 or so and just got sick of it and bought a bike. Got to 159 2 summers ago and have hung around 165 since. Want to get to 155 this season for some big climbing rides I'm going to be doing.

This was after getting all my measurements today. Not sure which is the most accurate.
Your body fat estimates are 20.28 % using the U.S. Army body fat algorithm, or
18.14 % using the U.S. Marine body fat algorithm, or
16.60 % using the U.S. Navy body fat algorithm, or
15.88 % using the formula developed by the YMCA.

I'm getting there again. 10 more pounds and I'm down to 180, this is where people start commenting how my cheeks look sunken in and you can see my ribs. A few more pounds and I get muscle definition and perhaps become a bit of a skeleton. Only my grandmother gets concerned and then she forces me to eat several helpings more then everybody else.

Three phases when loosing weight.

Comments from you friends:

phase 1: Wow, I see you've lost some weight!

phase 2: Wow, you sure look skinny, how do you do it!

phase 3: They give me a concerned look and don't say anything. Whisper to people around them, "what's wrong with him? Is he sick? He looks awfully gaunt.

At 5' 8" and 135 lb, I've reached phase 3 and am at my Triathlon race weight! No extra baggage and ready to kick some as#!!!

I live in Portland where we have too many hipsters already. Besides, I don't own a pork pie hat.

I did try on a pair of skinny jeans once. Surprisingly comfortable. I didn't realize jeans aren't made of real denim anymore which is pretty miserable when skin tight, especially when wet. But then again, getting a leather jacket that provides real protection is pretty tough too.
