I was riding with my club, and at our coffee stop I was listening to the discussion and it got me thinking...in our club, there's only one husband/wife team. There are lots of men who's wife/girlfriend doesn't participate, and women who's husband/boyfriend doesn't ride. When I was married, even though my ex was very physically active, she had no interest in trying a road bike.

What's your situation?

I ride and race on a tandem with my wife. But for the tandem, I would ride and train a lot less.

My girlfriend has a nice road bike that she got about a year ago. She doesn't ride as much as I do, but she enjoys it. i ride much harder by myself, so riding with her is like a recovery ride for me.

My wife stopped riding her half bike, but she'll still tandem with me if I ask her nicely.

My wife and I ride together. We started cycling about seven years ago on comfort bikes. Progressed to flat bar road bikes and finally last year got a couple of nice carbon road bikes. We love it. It keeps us together. She's an exercise freak and likes to do Insanity, T25, walk and run. Me, I'd rather ride 50 miles than run 5. I'm 60 and my wife is 56 so we're getting a late start but we have two centuries and many 50 to 75 miles rides in already. We're planning vacations around century rides and many weekend outings. I'd say cycling as a couple is great but it does take a big committment in time and money. Hard to do if you have little ones running around. Seems like we see older couples riding together more than younger ones.

Nope spent a lot of money on a couple different bikes, tried everything but she just didn't enjoy it so I sold them. We golf and ski together.

My wife rides 4-5 days/week, mostly on the trainer at 5:30AM before work. I hate the trainer so I ride in the afternoons. I love our occasional romance rides (on the bikes) which don't happen nearly often enough.

My wife does, but she's a 12 mph average while I am more like 16-17. So our rides together are pretty relaxed for me and I have to ride on my own to really push my own limits.

However, we also recently bought a couple of utility cycles, her a Taga and me a Bullitt. This way we can ride together and cart around kids, cargo, etc. instead of driving.

Me too. My wife starts freaking out at anything over about 15mph. We have done some casual 20 miler rides...but she's just not in to it. She would rather run a half marathon than go for a ride. Me...I'd rather ride a century than run 3 miles.

My wife rides about a dozen times each summer. I'm far more willing then she is to commute (traffic), ride solo, and brave some weather.

My wife rides a bike and I cycle. Sometimes we do these two activities at the same time and in close proximity to each other.

My wife rides with me. But when we ride together, it's not me getting in miles, it's a date. We go at her pace, period. I told her that when she first started riding. I figured eventually her pace would increase. It hasn't. So we still average about 7 mph when we ride together. I wouldn't change that either; it's definitely quality time we enjoy together, and even if I'm not being challenged physically, I still celebrate with her when she sets a personal best distance of 25 miles or whatever.

She did one group ride with me and hated it; even the slowest riders were too fast for her liking and we took the shortest route available. We've done one or two bike double dates with another couple and those went well. But that was a similar situation: I non-cycling wife and a patient hubby.

formerly - she went to test ride new bikes 5+ yrs ago, fell in the LBS parking lot and broke her wrist requiring surgery. Ultimately she has some balance (inner ear) issues and hasn't been on a bike since. Going to try and get her on a recumbent trike this year and she seems receptive to the idea

I ride significantly more than my wife does but she enjoys it and she does push herself. We have little intercoms so it's a good way to hang out and be social without having to be exactly side by side.

I got you all beat though - i'd rather ride 200 miles nonstop with no saddle than run 100 yards.

MY GF rides, and rides well. We both have IF Steel Crown Jewels, although we bought them independently of each other (pun intended). Funny how that worked out. In addition to road rides, we have done loaded tours together, including two in the mountains of MT, AB and B.C.. Now I tour alone since she didn't really take to it. We also ride together for transportation, and often ride part of the way to work together. Nice way to start the morning. There are five bikes on the fist floor of my house. Two road, two touring and a fixie commuter.

My GF was formerly married to a guy I used to ride with on group rides. Needless to say, he and I don't ride together any more. I know numerous other couples who ride together.

To quote my wife regarding motorsports and cycling "I'm glad you've found other weirdos that like to do those things. Please don't ask me to participate".

I enjoy running almost as much as cycling. I'm equally inept at both.

I'm the same as some of the other posters. If my wife and I want quality cycling time together we hope on our tandem! I know I work much harder on the tandem than on my single road bike.
