Good Deal? Trek XO 1 $400

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good Deal? Trek XO 1 $400

So, my spouse offered to give me a road bike for my birthday, we were considering either going bikes direct or seeing if there was any old stock at the LBS. So, I went by the LBS to see what they had, and while there wasn't anything new they did have a Trek XO 1 that they just took on a trade, and said that once they cleaned it up (tune up, new break pads, new bar tape, general cleaning) they'd sell it for $400.

It looks to be from 2008 or 2009 based on the paint job and components. Everything seems to be stock. It might be slightly large for me but the standover works (I guess I've got a long inseam) and its pretty comfortable. I'm going to take it for a test ride this week and see how it works. The other bike I was considering was the Gravity Liberty 1 from bikes direct.

Save up to 60% off new Road Bikes - Gravity Liberty 2 | Save up to 60% off new road bikes

So thoughts? I'm leaning towards the Trek, but thought I'd seek out opinions first.

That trek is a good, solid, versatile bike. If you stick with this, you'll be getting another bike anyway (but the trek is actually a good "only" bike to have). You could probably get $400 (if not more) for the XO if you don't keep it.

Components on the Trek are much better. Plus you get initial support from the LBS if you notice anything isn't working right.

The only downside would be the sizing. Consider looking at an online fit calculator and getting an estimate of how far off an "average" fit would be. Remember, everyone fits differently so a little off isn't a big deal.

Cool, thanks. From what the guy at the shop said (I think he was the owner) the only issue might be that its a little for my torso but he said that was an easy fix with a shorter stem.

The X0 is a cyclocross bike, you knew that, right? I have a 2009 frame and added my own components. It's a great basic 'cross bike. I raced it a couple seasons. It's like a crit bike for the dirt. I still enjoy riding it now and then although I have 2 other carbon bikes in the stable.

No, you're in the right place. Just wanted to be sure you got what you wanted. It's a good bike.
