Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know that I am not very fast, so lots of men and women are going to get there faster then me. Alot will ride farther then me too, but it is pretty impressive when I can tell people that I rode 4k miles last year

Yeah, I agree. Although I don't have the mileage you do, I don't know anyone personally that can even come close to my mileage. That makes us special, right?

Actually, I'm just happy to get there (where ever there is) in a timely fashion:-). I know I won't be the fastest, nor the one that goes the furthest.

Distance over speed for me, there are SO many riders out there that are faster. I'll only pick it up a notch if its a girl roadie. Then the competitive side comes out of me.

I love distance, I could just keep riding.

Same here. I know I'm not going to fall into either of the two categories, and I'm fine with that. Riding is about me and how much I enjoy and setting goals for myself.

What he said. I pick a distance, then I just try to finish. It won't be a long distance, and it won't be fast, but I'll finish what I started.

Why must it always be a competition? I ride for the enjoyment - I go fast if I want to go fast, I ride far if the weather is nice and I'm feeling good. I rode my best year last year, 2,600 miles and hope to do better this year. I'm neither the fastest nor go the farthest, but I sure enjoyed the rides.

I can't really respond because A) I'm not in it for the competition. I *am* in it for the personal improvement, and gauging my progress against others helps, so I could answer if it weren't for B) I am having a heck of a time defining my personal goals. Either I'm going to ride a century this year or I'm going to compete in my first road races and I don't...know...which. I'm leaning toward speed though. I do get more of a thrill out of going 25 on the flat than out of boasting that I did so and so many dozen miles today...

I would say the first half of most of my rides are for distance, and the second half when I realize if I don't hustle it is going to be dark, or I am going to miss my appointed time to do something it becomes about speed

As of now, 1325hrs 3/21, 291 people have viewed this thread, 41 have voted. I looked for a "neither" option. Didn't find one. Two choices, both competitive: doesn't interest me.

I'd vote for the neither option too. Depending on the day, sometimes I like to get there faster or ride further than I did last time, but couldn't really care about what others are doing.

damn, it'd be nice if more people were as passionate about having a 3rd option in a presidential election as they are about having a 3rd option in this poll --- or does this forum somehow attract
3rd party supporters?

I voted for "Getting there faster than anyone else", because it's more patriotic and has higher moral values

So if it's about meeting or beating personal goals, which one applies more? Are your personal goals speed or distance related?

I'm not very competitive, but I do try to outdo myself every year for mileage. This is my first year full time as a teacher, so having the summer months should make it easier for me to reach goals. I'm shooting for 7000 this year.

I prefer to ride longer, but if I can ride longer and faster, that would be the bomb.

Distance is more important to me than speed ... but even though I rode 9064.8 miles in 2004, I know a number of people who did more than that ... even twice that amount ... so I can hardly hope to ever ride farther than anyone else.

I enjoy riding fast. I prefer the exertion of a hard effort over the exertion of an extended effort. Plus, I get home in time to play with the wife and kids.

But I don't care if I finish first. Actually, I seek out riders who are faster than me.
