Is this a good deal for my first carbon bike?
Hi guys. I hope this is the right place to post this.
I found a 2006 Scott CR1 Pro in new condition on craigslist and was wondering what your thoughts were. I'm looking for my first all-carbon ride and I'm leaning towards buying this.
Here's what the ad says:
PRICE LOWERED FOR QUICK SALE!
LIKE NEW 2006 Scott CR1 PRO 54cm with less the 5 miles riding on it, still has the small nipples on the original tires. I bought this New in 2007, took it for one short ride and I found I would rather ride my Trek Top Fuel. It has a few light scratches on fork from being moved about different areas of the house. Has updated seat, handle bars, Carbon Water bottle cages and 2 unused Camel back water bottles. $1,100. FIRM
You Must See This Bike to Realize that you are basically getting a NEW Bike, Not one with years of use.
Bikepedia says: 2006 Scott CR1 Pro (20 Speed) - BikePedia
I found a few reviews from when the bike came out and they are all really positive.
Let me know what you think. I'm getting the itch!!

On par with bicycle Blue Book.
2006 Scott CR1 Pro 20-speed - New and Used Bike Value
I'm a fan of Scott bikes too. If it fits, it's not a steal, but probably fair.

Any reason you want a carbon bike from 2006 rather than a 2013 CAAD 10 for example? I know you can find great deals on CAADs on Ebay. Too many people buy awesome machines thinking they will like the sport and then don't.
Also a local shop has a brand new, never ridden Specialized Roubaix, carbon for $1300. Which would include warranty and service from the shop. $1100 is not a steal to me. (Not sure what year it is, just know it's not current or 2013.)

Well, like the ad says, it is pretty well brand new and never ridden except for a couple of miles when it was first bought. A brand new bike in carbon and Ultegra for that price looks really good, and it fits me(its a 54cm). Anything newer in that catagory is used and/or much more expensive. I live in Canada and bike stuff costs more here. This ad is actually from the US and I live close to the border, so going to get it wouldn't be an issue. Why don't I go to a shop states-side? I really don't have the time to go shopping at different places to find a shop I like and a decent deal.
Right now I still have my '09 Gary Fisher AR Super. It was my first road bike and has treated me well, but I think its time for an upgrade. Even though this bike is older, I would still consider this an upgrade since my AR has an aluminium frame and a mix of tiagra and 105. According to the seller, this build is about 4-5 lbs lighter than my current ride, as well.
Not having a warranty isn't something I thought of, but isn't a major concern. I have the tools and can wrench bikes myself fairly well.

I would say if you could go have it checked out by a shop and get it for around $900 that would be a good deal. Ck the prices here. Bicyclebluebook.com.

I ride Cervelo and Scott bikes....Scott is just an awesome bike to ride. If the seller is reputable, and the bike is what the ad says, and it fits, that's a lot more bike for the money than anything I could come close to in the market where I live. (which is ironically where 90% of bikes are made, but still more $$$ than many US retail prices.....don't let me get started on this! )

What is low miles? 5, 10, 500, 1000, 5000?
And another poster's point is true. Carbon hides damage really well. Testing for reliability on carbon has changed a lot too. I don't think CEN standards existed when this bike was manufactured. They were released sometime in 2006 but bike model year numbers usually are designed/engineered and manufactured the previous year. And CEN standards have been updated since. And additional testing like testing fork steerer is a new thing, only because in 2008 Cervelo gained a reputation for unreliable steerer tubes causing bike accidents. As you can imagine, there is no way to tell if the steerer on this bike is compromised, you can't even see the steerer tube. According to Cervelo, slight damage from shipping can cause a steerer to crack, no riding necessary. What about the inside of the frame? Just because there is a crack in the bike doesn't mean it will show on the outside... And do you know how to listen to know if the carbon has been compromised? In another thread, a poster says you can tell by sound, but I don't how to do that. Do you?
I don't think this bike will explode. And of course there are carbon bikes that people have ridden for 100,000 miles. And this bike could be one of them. But $1,100 is also a lot. But then i guess we all take risks on any bike we buy, even if it is new. But I'd rather buy new carbon than used and trust used AL over carbon. Call me ignorant or stupid if you want.

I talked the the guy for half an hour, I rode the bike, talked to the guy for another hour, and then I bought it. It all seemed legit. Thanks, everyone, for your input.

From the way the bike was described in the ad, it's good that you saw and rode it before plunking down the money.

Congrats on the new bike, and I hope you enjoy it. With that kind of budget you could have gone new Merckx EMX-1/Shimano 105 Complete Road Bike - 2012 | Competitive Cyclist and got a warranty.
but if you're happy, be happy and just ride.

Everyone says that when they see the sizes but the sizes are listed different than others do it. If you look at the size chart, the 51 is actually more like a 56, if not a 58. The OP would have been fine with the size 48 and maybe a stem change.

And then that makes it even harder. Even I don't have a clue about stack and reach, but I do always fall back to ETT length. That at least gets you in the ballpark.

Congrats on the bike. It's a good deal. I've had the exact same bike in the exact same size.

Here it is:
Now I just need some pedals and a new ANT+ speed/cadence sensor and I'll be all set.
