A serious Question on Strava, Why?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey i could beat a pro in a ncc race... Heck, the difference between a weak cat 3 and a regular bike rider is big, let alone pro to joe.

Going along with this...most pros are out on their training rides and could care less about getting a KOM. Most of them still get KOMs because they're naturally faster, better riders than the rest of us. However, if you're segment hunting/sniping, you know exactly where that segment is and you're going all out on that segment (probably with a tailwind or a leadout).

At least thats been my experience. Lance was riding around Scottsdale a few weeks back, he got a handful of KOMs, but looking at his rides, he was just cruising along. Most of those are gone now, because one of the local guys went out on an ideal day and hammered the thing over and over until they beat his speed.

But hey, thats just my observation, I've only hit 48mph in a sprint, none of this crazy 50mph stuff. Ha!

Just to clear something up. That was no where near a sprint. That was just ramping up my regular cruising speed. I just don't like unknown people riding behind me. They usually do cause crashes. Am I right?

Why is my sprint so intriguing to anyone? I use othe riders as carots. If I can see them in front of me, I ride them down, pass them, and just keep going, Looking for the next jersey. when I don't have anyone in front of me. I ride even harder because I don't ever want to be passed. In short, all I see is jerseys. I never draft anyone. i will ride my wind, to the left of them. When I can't pass. I also ride wide to the left. I have drafted before but quickly pulled off, funny feeling of being pulled along and not pedaling. Not to my liking. I see why it is done in racing, conserving energy and all. But, I am riding for the workout, to burn calories, to not think, just pedal,HARD. I am riding for a limited time over a predetermined coarse set by me. I only have a few hours, before i have to be somewhere else.

I pass pace lines, i have had matching jeseys in groups of 4-10, try to hang on. I drop them. I think nothing of it. I have to be finished my ride, and be back home. showered and dressed, by a certain time, or face the wrath!

Last saturday I had a group of matching Cadence kit, maybe 5 riders. I passed them at Conshocken, as they were clicking in. As I am riding along I come to a deadend, I turned around and headed back to the first road that I can take to get around the construction. As I am heading to the road I see the group, I tell them deadend, rode past, and they turned around, I make a left and crank up a hill, I then hear " where did he go?" "There he is". I pay no mind to it, and keep riding. I then make a left and crank up a nice hill, I hear someone coming up behind me as I click out and wait for the light. It's the lead rider, He left his guys, it takes at least a minute for the rest of them to catch up, and click out. No one even acknowledges me. The light changes, I click in, and pedal up another hill. I hear no one behind me for at least 10 seconds. It's the lead rider again, breathing hard, Pulls beside me and yells, WE ARE NOT RACING! We're just riding! I look at him, shrug my shoulders, smile, and look back. All of his group is all strung out and weaving all over the place. I look back at him, smile again, he looks back and yells @#$%. And drops back. I keep riding .

Is that the racing mentality I would have to look forward too? I was just riding my normal loop, AT MY PACE!

Nah my regular cruising speed is above 20mph. I try to keep at least 21mph, sometimes 22mph, sometimes 20 and 19. It always depends on the weather. and what bike that I use. I have three. All road bikes. 2 with Madfibers and 1 with Topolino's. The Madfibers are always faster, don't know why. They just are. Love my Topolino's , but that is usually my 19mph. But as I said, they are my babies.

I am going to stop letting my 8 flagged KOM's get to me, I can and will get them back! I just don't like the thought of someone being able to flag them, just because they get a hair up their Butt.

And on Strava I do go after certain segments to get the KOM. When you ride you pass several KOM segments, You decide which ones you want, and go for it. That is why Garmin now notifies you of potential segments as you ride.

Training aids! If I go after a climb, day in, day out for weeks. each time trying to get there faster and faster to take that elusive KOM. IS THAT NOT TRAINING?

Meanwhile, so are 300 other people trying to do the same thing. Kom's are all over the place, not in just one area. One 45 mile ride I do maybe has 50 of them. I know the ones i want, and will go for them. And guess what. SO WILL 500 other people!!

Ah, I understand now. The person who flagged you has only one bike with Madfibers and is totally jealous.

Using Madfibers is totally cheating, just like driving your car on the segments. You should be flagged.

Probably dope too.

Bullhockey.

Then how'd you know how many riders were in that pace line? Why did you note what kit they were wearing? Why did you keep track of where they were going?

They may not be racing, but you are.

Well, playing at racing, anyway.

Nah. That kind of training is nothing more than a good way to getting burned out on the way to being really good at being mediocre.

And regular cruising speed of 21 mph or so is nothing special. There's no way you go from "cruising" at 21 to going 28 in a "ramp up from regular cruising", though. It takes almost 2 1/2 times the power to go 28 mph compared to going 21 mph. So, again, bullhockey.
