Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 wd40 for cleaning.
My go to lube is tri-flow. Is it the best? Maybe not. Does it keep my drive train quite, and shifting smoothly? Yes. Do I need to replace my chains occasionally if I use tri-flow? Yes (chains are cheap and if there are lubes that make chains last a little longer, oh well, I don't have the patience to keep trying different ones to find out)

I haven't tried all available lubes, but I have tried a few, and I keep going back to old faithful. My regular bike commute includes long dusty sections of dirt/gravel MUP so no matter what I do my chain is going to get dirty. I've found dry lubes take longer to get grimy but in the end they end up being worse than the wet lube, grime wise. The wet lube, though it collects dirt, it also flushes some off when applying it.

I also use tri flow on my road bikes that don't go on the dirt MUP's and I don't have any problems with excessive grime build up on those.

Usually the clear signs of spring are birds singing, trees budding, and a wave/no-wave thread on BF. I haven't seen any lately, isn't it spring yet?

I'd like to know what you carry with you when you ride. Also, should I wear gloves?

Take M&Ms, you won't need gloves.

I use WD 40 as a helmet cleaner and chamois lube.

I learned that the hard way. Tried it in the washing machine first. Hurt my neck and cracked the helmet.

I'm not a mechanic. I'm not even a wannabe mechanic. I do put wd-40 on English muffins, however, as it goes well with Nutella.

Just about anything on an English Muffin will make it better, esp if it helps is go down easier. I may try this.

I leave my helmet on the bars when I run my car and bike through the automatic car wash. All three come out sparkling and clean.

On an unrelated note does anyone know what causes BB creak?

You should have continued and put it in the dryer. The heat would have fused it back together.

Dunno what it would have done to the helmet.

I believe BB creak is caused by WD-40.

Really? Makes sense. I used WD-40 to grease the BB when I installed it. So the creak lets me know it's working?

I put my bike on the car roof rack and ride it naked through the car wash. Kill three birds with one stone.
