I use WD40 on my chains before I put them away for the winter. Then I put on a appropriate chain lube based on the riding conditions.

I use it. Been using it for years. I wipe my whole bike down with it. Most of my bikes are 40 plus years old. Maybe works better on old bikes.

WD-40 is a truly excellent aluminum cutting fluid. We machinists use it all the time for that.
It's also a decent (not great) penetrant. It can function as a pre-lube in this manner.
It's a terrible lubricant, in the big picture of, well, lubricants.

I like it for a cleaner of dirty, oily parts, like the chain, and to displace water from the chain and other parts where water isn't welcome. Never use it for a lube because it isn't.

WD-40 is great for displacing water and coating objects you don't want to rust. I didn't think my bike had any steel on it, but my 6800 shifter parts started rusting one day so they get a shot of WD40 after a wet ride.
WD-40 PROTIP: Don't buy the spray cans. Buy a gallon of the liquid and pour it into a $1.99 Walmart spray bottle. It's like 600% cheaper this way.

wd40 is not a lube. its blend of solvent and oil is too much solvent. i use it as a solvent to remove oil and then add a real lube.

Lube type is highly arguable in the biking world, similar to the bore cleaner subject among shooters. Choose your lube but keep in mind that chains wear out. Period.
Beyond lube....thoroughly wipe your chain down with a clean (old t-shirt is good) rag to remove dust, dirt and dirty lube. Do this regularly.

no matter how bad you think wd40 is for use as a lube, it's a lot better than white lightning wax lube. omg. sucks.
