Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike keeps jumping gears

I recently bought my bike into my LBS to get it tuned up. I had snapped my chain so I just decided to get a full tune up along with the new chain. When I picked it up the bike it would constantly jump gears when I'm in the larger sprockets on climbs. It's so bad I've actually had to get off and walk the bike on some hills. In the small sprockets on flats it's perfectly fine.

The only clue I have is that I may need a new cassette. Any suggestions? Shifters and rear derailleur are SRAM Force (I believe 2009 edition) and cassette is SRAM Red. I bought the bike used so I'm not sure of mileage.

In order of likelihood:

Bent derailleur hanger?

Limiter screw?

Cable tension?

I bought the bike back the the store and they suggested cable tension. They tightened the cable tension and it made not one iota of difference. Not sure about other issues, I'll take a picture when I get home tonight.

It could be many things. But my commuter bike does this when using a SRAM chain. Switch to Shimano and no issues. But in your case, I would bet that you may also need a new cassette and potentially a new RD hanger.

Was going to say, jumping gears for me was a chain issue. The 105 Shimano chain has no issues now that it's installed properly. Just check over your chain to make sure each link is solid, that it isn't wider somewhere, coming apart etc.

OK. I have no idea what chain the local bike store put on, nor do I now how to install a chain. Looks like I'll be heading back there tomorrow

The LBS should be able to check the derailleur hanger very easily. If it's bent, they can also adjust it very easily.

Do NOT change chain or cassette before you check the derailleur hanger first.

Does it only happen when under load, like when you put down the power during climbing? Or does it happen normally too?

Oh, another thing to check: make sure your wheel is properly seated when the quick release is locked.

Any time you have a bike working properly, then put a new chain on and it starts jumping, it is positively a worn out cassette.

Agreed, I've found a much better shop in the meantime. Its 20 miles away as opposed to 4, but still worth it.

your shop sucks. drop them like a hot potato.

how can they tune up a bike and not see that it is operating ok? i can twiddle a knob here, pull a lever there, twist a few screws randomly. thy are supposed to do it purposefully not randomly.

That's not even the half of it. They didn't complete the tune up the date they stated they would, and when I picked the bike up the back wheel seized on me and I had to call a cab to get home.

SRAM OG-1090 10-speed Cassette-Black - Normal Shipping Ground

So, onto the new cassette...

Guessing this will be fine with 2009 Force?

You definitely have to find a new shop.

I would go with an Ultegra 12-30 10 speed cassette instead of this.

Do you know if that will work with a short cage derailleur?

What makes the Ultegra cassette a better option, other than price?
