Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

vertical rear light

Hi, bikeforums
Can anybody recommend a tail light which mounts as close to the seat post as possible, vertically?
I have a cateye 3 led light right now... forgot the name of it, but it's a nuisance
Thanks

Thanks! It says it's designed for seat stays. Would it fit a 31.6mm seatpost?

I've got a topeak light that mounts on the seat post, works great for what I need.

Topeak® Cycling Accessories ? Products - RedLite? Mega

I'd buy it again.

Dinotte 300. Comes with various mounting brackets for seat stays and seatposts. I would buy again.

Should not be a problem. Its a stretchy rubber material and fits easily on my square BMC seat post and 27.2 seatpost.

Looks like the Cygolight HotShot would be hard to beat. I run a Cateye TL LD1000 which is no longer made.

It's very bright within a fairly narrow range of angles. The brightness drops off substantially once you get 10-20 degrees off-axis.

I have a cygolite hotshot and that thing is fantastic. It's extremely visible even in bright light and for $26 or so it's hard to beat: Amazon.com : Cygolite Hotshot 2-Watt USB Rechargeable Taillight with USB Cable : Bike Taillights : Sports & Outdoors

The narrow angle that Dunbar mentions is true but you set them up so drivers can see you from a couple hundred yards away and behind you, and they're great for that.

Those Dinotte lights are always very highly spoken of too but they're spendy.

I have a couple of these. I like them a lot.

https://www.serfas.com/products/view/669/refererroducts%7Cindex%7Clights%7Ctail-lights

I sometimes mount it on the seat post, sometimes on a seat stay, sometimes on the back of my helmet.

I really like the Serfas Shield as well, but it doesn't quite meet the requirement you stated.

Another vote for Cygolite hotshot. Best tail light I have ever had. Super bright, good bracket and out of the way. I have two of the Hotshots and a bought extra brackets for every bike I own.

The Thunderbolt is the way to go. It has flexible rubber straps, so you don't have to attach a bracket to your seat post. Bright as all hell....don't make the mistake of looking right at it when you turn it on!

If you want a very bright solution, I use Portland Design Works Danger Zone tail light. I use this on my commuter and it has a great blinking mode that really grabs attention.

If you want something sleek, I'd grab the Knog Boomer high power 1watt light. I plan on getting this for my road machine just to be law compliant when I get stuck out after sunset.

Both available on amazon.com with reviews as well.

This. $12 from Dealextreme (Ultrafire WF-501b and their velcro strap). It's not on the seatpost though, which is great because I can more easily turn it on/off as needed.

I have two Serfas Thunderbolt's:

Serfas Thunderbolt Tail Light > Accessories > Lighting > Rear Lights | Jenson USA Online Bike Shop - Mobile

That's because the bright-blink mode, which is BRIGHT, lasts 2.5 hours (ish), and I like to ride longer than that. The less-bright blink mode is still quite bright and lasts a really long time.

Knog make, unquestionably, the sleekest, best-designed tail lights for "vertical, as-close-as-possible-to-the-seatpost" mounting. The Boomer is nice (and has both AAA batt and USB options), the 4V is very good (with nice flash modes) but their best is the USB rechargeable, 70 lumen, Road R. It's the brightest, has angled emitters to compensate for seat post angle and deliver maximum brightness, is exceptionally easy to take on/off, has some side illumination, looks great, and is extremely durable. It will fit 31.6 seat post.

the exposure lights are very good but pricey, I am using the Flare, becaue of the flexiiblity of mounting it higher up for more line of sight visibility and out of the way under the saddle.
75 lumens is a good output.

The under saddle mount silicon strap allows you to change the light angle as well

If your looking for pure output, then the Dinotte 140L (140 lumens) is the most flexible in a light, purely for night use, but it is so bright it works well in the day as well

Ha! That looks cool!

Great idea for those that don't use seat bags, although you know what, I bet that might work with my Scicon bag's Roller mount. I'll take a look at that.

Yeah, that's slick.
