Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

[Saddle] Suspiciously cheap Selle SMP - counterfeit ?

Does anybody have any experience with buying Selle SMP saddles on this Asian auction portal: selle smp full carbon on AliExpress.com ?

I found out that the portal is quite reliable, sometimes the feedback is fake, but ordered stuff arrives.
It's the Selle SMP Full Carbon that caught my attention, mainly because of the low price, it sells for approx. $50 there, whereas everywhere else you need to spend ten times more - $500.
The same model is being sold by some Chinese guy on ebay for a slightly bigger price - biddings reach $120.

I wonder whether those Selles are true Selles and not some locally made counterfeits instead.

What do you guys think ?

Totally fake, anything ALIexpress. I got a great deal on my Selle SMP Drakon for $200 shipped from a dealer in California, they were willing to work a better price for me. I purchased from these guys: Imagine Gear - Gransfors Bruks Axes, Hennessy Hammocks, Recon Sleeping Bags and more In fact, it was Eric that helped me. Shipped to me in original box with all paperwork.

so, what is the difference with the material build between these 2 saddles?

How will the non-genuine saddle perform differently to the genuine model?

I test rode an SMP and was looking for cheap prices on ebay and such and it looks like you can't find them for a whole lot cheaper than dealer price. I ended up buying an Adamo which is about the same situation, although I noticed that people were selling the Adamo demo models on ebay (has the green on the back.)

What are you expecting people to say? How would we know? The whole deal with a counterfeit is that you don't know exactly who made it and therefore can't know what you're getting.

You can brag on your friends and riding partners about your "$250" saddle, until it starts squeaking like hell and drives everyone nuts.

It's most likely junk. I doubt anyone building counterfeit worries about quality and long term durability. It probably will fall apart quickly. But even if it does anyone is foolish taking the chance. You're better off buying something else of known quality for a lower price like last years model.
