Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tarmac Transformation (Warning low-res photos:-(

Finally got around to painting my frame today. Some things didn't turn out exactly how I wanted but all in all I like the final outcome. Snapped some photos during the process and figured I would share them, unfortunately they are not high quality but they are adequate. Will post some higher resolution photos when I get it assembled later this week. Seeing as how I painted it in my garage with a compressor that is entirely too small for this type of job, I should be ecstatic with the outcome. Please excuse the extremely messy garage.

I am totally confused; maybe it is the photo quality, but I don't think so. How many bikes are we looking at? Did it start out black and red? What is the silver bike in the 4th photo? How did it get that way? Where did you get the decals? Sorry for the incredulity, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Nice looking after all, but I don't get it.

He painted it grey, then masked it. the black sworks logo in the grey bike picture is the masking which he peeled off revealing the base coat.

This^^, Yes I am currently working on starting my shop(CycleWorks).

-It started black/red, then it was primed, then a few different stages of basecoat and then cleared in the final pictures.
-Decals/stencils were sourced from online vendors and a buddy that owns a sign shop.

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't want to post all the photos of the step-by-step process as I thought it would be a bit overkill, but it would have made the process more clear.

Thanks, but it surely doesn't look that way to me. It starts out red and black. The light gray looks like primer to me, and I can't see any masking of decals on that one. Then we see the shiny gray one that has the black and white decals. How did it get that color? Next picture it is painted again, white this time. What happened to the black and white decals that were on the shiny gray frame? Besides, have you ever seen anyone who could skillfully mask decals? And are you saying they are on a level below the final paint? That would be weird. I don't think you have it right. OP, where are you?

Edit: Okay, I got it now after OP's last post.

Right on. Paint looks great. I ask though because you should be cautious with the legal side of repainting and rebadging-- especially when you put your shops name on it. Doing it as a personal project is said to be shady and just kept on the down low, doing it professionally might throw some red flags though.

Looks great either way. Always loved the s-works logo.

Yea I considered the "legal" side of it and aside from the fact that the logos were sourced from outside vendors it is being portrayed in a light that still shines "look at me I'm a Specialized" and I feel as if that negates the fact that just repainted/rebadged it. I know that isn't completely justifiable but it helps me sleep at night ;-)

Thanks for the comments everyone

A couple reasons,
1. I like supporting the company, Yes it more or less free advertising, and I am ok with that
2. I like the way it looks.

You didn't mention polishing the clearcoat. Did you do this?
Can you please tell us what kind of paint you used?...from primer through clear?

Looks very nice and really brings that older Tarmac frame much closer to the new ones in look.
I am sure many feel the same way as I that the paint jobs of the older Tarmacs weren't too hot.

Used all PPG products NCS sealer, DBC basecoat, and DCU clear. I haven't buffed/polished the clear haven't decided if I'm going to spend the time to do it. It really doesn't need it to be honest.
I agree the old paint job was cool and all but it really needed to be brought back to life in a new way
On a side note I got it assembled this morning minus the chain. Waiting for the new chain to come in then I'll be riding it this weekend. Hopefully it will be faster because we all know that the bike is what makes us fast.

I don't understand what the concern is here. There's no problems putting personal or business logos on cars and trucks, and you can certainly debadge them as well, or paint a big Chevy, Ford or whatever on them if so desired.

I also have always wondered about this. I've never done the research on this topic but I agree I painted my Z28 and no one cares if I were to de-badge it. I think where the "legal" issue comes up if I were to de-badge the bike and throw Cycleworks stickers all over it claiming that it is in fact a house/shop bike and no longer a Spesh.(Which is obviously not the case)

Looks great, really like it.

Did you sand down the old color or smooth it out in any way?

Yes sanded down all the old graphics and deglossed the entire frame prior to applying sealer.

Painting 101 : Always, always spray parts oriented as you would see them life.

That means dont paint your bike upside down, because that huge dry spot on the top of top tube will be very noticablde. : o)

Shhhhhh!! Good eye. Yes I know you are always supposed to paint objects as they sit in "real life" but it was much easier to do upside down. I am just going to deal with the small arear of dry shot for now and then in the winter I will buzz it down and reclear it. I honestly don't know how you could see it or if you were just guessing. It isn't as bad as you might think though I am pretty picking and I am ok with it until the winter time so its not that bad.

-EnsitMike- Sealer is the primer barrier between the material(substrate) and the basecoat

Couple pictures from my ride today, too pretty of a day not to go out, 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.

And a old picture
