I wish I'd done something like this for the headtube on one of my bikes, where the brake cables eventually made a wear pattern in the paint.
In fact I just saw a commercial for a 3M spray on film for cars called Paint Defender. Anyone used this? It's supposed to be removable, to be reapplied on an annual basis... |
You can get enough to do all of your bikes for your entire lifetime for $6 less here on amazon.com: Amazon.com: 3M Clear Bra Paint Protection Bulk Film Roll 6-by-48-inches: Automotive

I have a feeling this is going to end up like this...

What if the bra paint protector gets scratched? Is there a bra paint protector protector?

thanks

I have been using the automotive grade 3m paint protection for about 8 years. It turns yellow after a few years due to exposure. Peel it off and replace it with new. It is almost invisible. Great stuff.

While the 3M clear bra works well on the front end of my car, I can only see it as useful for certain parts of the bike such as chain stay and behind the chainring to prevent damage incase the chain falls.Maybe the top bar if you use a chain for daily commuting.

I've used BONK over the years.
I haven't been to their site in years and they've definitely upgraded their product line. I've used it on my drive-side chainstay and underneath my down tube. |

I've seen paint chips from hard hits on the down tube. |

These are probably the only two part of the bike that you'll need to cover. Then maybe some small patches where the cables may rub against the frame.
-Rear section of the seat tube -Where the tire could rub the inside of the chain stay when removing/replacing the rear wheel. -The top of the top tube wouldn't be a bad idea since I've scratched that area with my clipless pedals getting on/off the bike. -Where speed/cadence sensor zip ties to the fork or chain stay. |

I used it under my top tube actually where my Podium Big Chills seem to always rub the underside of it. I also picked up a couple smaller 21oz Camelback Podiums for the new bike to avoid that. I had enough left over to do the back of the seat tube, inside of the chainstay around the bottom bracket area, inside the upper of the front fork where the tire passes through, and the underside of the downtube. I watched a Youtube video or two on it and that was helpful, but I still found it difficult to apply the tape without getting fingerprints on the sticky side at the tips that leave it less than perfectly clear and I have a few minor air bubbles mostly where they will be hard to see. Maybe there is a technique to applying it that gets around those fingerprint issues IDK. I wish I had some leftover for the other bike that gets rubbed by my Kuat and has cable rubs. I might order some more in the future now that I see this bulk deal available. I saw one Youtube video of an entire 'race kit' that was precut for a bike that covered nearly every part of the bike. I didn't know those existed. |
It's not a bike-bra. It's a bike-ssiere.
|
If my baby's gonna wear a bra, I'd prefer clear.
|
I use Gorilla Tape Clear repair on chain stay and cable rub points on my head set. It's 5 dollars, stays clear and removes somewhat clean.

Suspect the 3M "bra" is 3M packing tape, but what do I know.
It's super tough and completely clear. Just stick it on and it's good forever. I have a 6" x 12' roll I've been using forever. Just cut bits to size. |
