Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's better than my piddly 10km on the spin bike, 4km on the rowing machine, and 1km on the treadmill yesterday. But it did remove a pound from me.

That sounded a little weird.

"Slam Dance" was a good movie. You go, Adam Ant! Wayne Wang also directed the very special "Chan is Missing" which better suited his style and was an overall more excellent movie.

The Mariners had scored 9 runs by the bottom of the 7th so you'd think they'd be headed for a sure win. They're playing the Astros, for god's sake. And, yet, Houston now has 6 runs. What the hell, man?

Today was 54 miles and 4200 feet of climbing on some beautiful roads. Hot air balloon ride tomorrow. Back to MN on Monday. And good news, the weather is warming up to tolerable temperatures at home!

I am one of the few who enjoy indoor workouts.

The gym we are members of has Olympic and 25-metre pools, more spin bikes than you can poke a stick at, many other cardio workout machines, and lots and lots of weights and associated strengthing equipment. Plus there are two spa baths, two saunas, a water slide, and free group workout sessions for members.

And with the weather the way it is here (getting on to winter), indoors is a good thing.

And, despite all the cycling I might do, my weight losses have been more substantial with swimming and walking for 90 minutes at least twice a week.

Don't feel bad, it could be much much worse....you could have the Cubs as your home team...

Great story at The Derby . . . a horse the owner bought for $10,000* that everybody said was worthless and would never win a race, just won the Kentucky Derby.

The jockey wore a silhouette of a jackass on the back of his jersey, and the initials "DAP" for DumbAss People on the front. You gotta love it!

* You should know that people pay millions for horses that run in the big big races.

So my legs were tired at the 50 mile mark, so instead of the usual long downhill followed by a steady one mile climb before getting back to the house, I decided to take a little shortcut that would lessen my climb at the end...or so I thought. At the top of the shorter climb out, the cross street was too busy for me to deal with, so I had to cut across and then go a long block up a very steep hill, maxing out the heart and lungs. The best laid plans....

Anyone tells you DC is flat and built on a swamp, don't believe them...

Yeah, to get that kind of climbing in that kind of distance in MN, you've got to just go up and down the bluffs.

I am bad at math and recently tried to learn to play the ukulele, but that didn't go too well. I have not given up totally on that one though, just taking a break for now.

a gently rolling swamp?

IME it's more flatter east and south, with more gravity to the north and west (generally). Where were you riding?
