Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any riders familiar with the Lake Placid, NY area?

I posted this in the regional forum where it dropped like a brick in a pool filled with jello with 0 replies. So I'm posting it here where all the action is.

Any riders in the Lake Placid, NY area?
I like to go to the Adirondacks for short vacations and usually go to Old Forge or the Speculator areas, but thought about trying the Lake Placid area this time.

Could anyone give me any info about the best time to go (e.g. when the black flies are gone), good places to ride, places to stay where I could bring my bike in the room, etc?

Thanks!

We visited there in 2006 and stayed at the KOA (non cycling trip). Driving from the KOA to Lake placid (the town) by Whiteface mountain along 86, I noticed a lot of people on road bikes. That road was wide with a nice wide bike lane too.

That's all i have...

There is a bike shop right on main street in Lake Placid. You can contact them and they should help. Also this guy rides around that area also .

The Econolodge just SE of Placid is nice, and should have no issue with the bike. I have used it hiking, and the pool and hot tub are nice.

Black flies are variable, and it will absolutely depend on how hot the summer gets how quickly. I am a bad one to ask though, because to me, they are all in your head, if you let them bother you or not.

If you are riding out of Placid, go to Keene Valley and the Noonmark Diner. It is kind of a universal stop for hikers, and I have never had a bad experience there. Typically everyone there is athletic, from all walks of life, and it is kind of a cult spot for 46ers, if you find that interesting.

Thanks for the info. Well, I got attacked by black flies once I think it was in the Speculator area when kayaking and it definitely wasn't fun! Is 46er like a 41er?

The High Peaks has 46 peaks that were originally believed to be over 4k feet. So there is a group of folks that hike them all, and if you register and write trip reports, you get to be an official "46er". I have hiked them all, but didn't do my homework.

In my experience, black flies can destroy you in a boat, or sitting in a campground, but if you are moving, you are fine. For cycling, I actually prefer basing in the North Creek / Long Lake area, because there are several century loops you can lay out, and traffic is way less. But you won't get the stiff climbing like you will in Jay or Wilmington.

Thanks for the recommendation. How many miles does the 28/28N loop make?

About 85 if I remember correctly. I last did it from the campground between Speculator and Long Lake (Lewey Lake?), and it was 103 from start to stop.

EDIT: North Creek has a great downtown, but it is not on 28 or 28N. It is kind of wedged in the crotch of them, along the river.
