enve 45 tubular question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

enve 45 tubular question

I went to look at a set of enve tubulas today and saw this weird cut out in the tire bed. Is this normal for enve wheels?

I would have thought the rim bed would be continuous

I have never seen an Enve tire bed before, so I have no direct knowledge. Nevertheless it kind of looks like a patch to me.

Something is VERY up with that rim.

That space is molded in so the bladder can be removed after baking. Once removed a carbon cap is glues in. I then assume they putty the gaps, sand and then paint.

Regardless that is NOT what it should look like.

Where did you buy the wheels?

Hopefully it's more like you are looking at buying rather than now owning. That looks like an Enve takes rejected parts and sells them.

I used to have two sets of the 65 tubulars and remember seeing that similar patch. BUT, it was flushed with the rim bed.

I'd be a bit worried about the unfinished look of that area if I was going to buy those wheels used.

thanks for all the replies. I got a reply from enve saying it was completely normal and it's part of the bladder removal process. I didn't buy the wheels yet, but I think I will now. It was too big of a risk to buy them right away because I've never seen anything like that before.

A quick internet search for "enve bladder" shows similar pics.

am i right that Wheelbuilder's wants 850 for one of them? if so, ha.

Well seems like they are ok...here's an email from Enve

The patch will look very different from rim to rim. Because this is the area in which the bladder is removed, there will be variances.

Tubular rim patches look slightly different from the clincher rims, as we have to create an in-set for them to set right – along with scrim layers for tubular adhesion – not allowing for much finishing or for a “cleaner” look. With a clincher rim, we’re allow a bit more tolerance to clean up the patch as we’re working with a rim-strip.

Overall – the patch on your rims looks just fine, and is perfectly normal to glue-up a tubular tire to ride.

Did they look at that pic?

It looks like the resin never flowed on that patch. They do have to glue it in after the bladder is removed but they should be able to do a bit of putty and sanding to finish off the rim bed or, once glued, the tire may not sit exactly right.

Not only does the patch look horrible but on the lower edge of the rim, where it transitions to the brake track, that edge looks messed up as well.

I would QC fail that rim without a second thought.

If you glue a tire onto that, I bet you feel a nice "thump thump" every revolution.

These pics show a much more finished process:

I would not buy that particular pair of wheels. If I already owned them, I would fill the void with Bondo so the tire did not have a void below it.

looks like the "finished" part of the patch fell out. or, more likely, was never done in the first place. surprised the manufacturer didn't notice it when asked about it in the picture. or maybe that is how they did it in the past and have recently changed. OTOH i've lived with worse and have almost forgotten that my crank arms don't match on one of my bikes. it's only been a couple of years though.

previous poster's link showed it to be almost undetectable if i'm looking at the right pic.

Did ENVE know you were wanting to buy the wheel used, or did they possibly think it was a wheel you'd bought new from a vendor and were potentially inquiring about a warranty replacement? I wonder if that would have made a difference in their response, but then maybe I'm just a cynic.

There seems to be a difference in the way the clinchers look vs tubular as they explained to me. These wheels are new from a charity auction laced with ck hubs. I purchased them and enve claimed they are ok. I got them for less than half of full retail so we'll see how it goes.
