Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If it's just a little discomfort (slight pain) when inhaling it's likely your back muscles that are tight and don't like to stretch.

i get a nice cough, like something's in the throat after a long all out chase. i know what causes it though... a deep and overwhelming desire to catch the guy in front of me.

depending on how hard and deep you were breathing, the diaphragm muscles can be overworked. some might think the pain is from the lungs.

now that i think about it, i'm fortunate i'm not a doctor, they must get these kinds of complaints, and are expected to come up all kinds (BS ) explanations for it, all the time.

Lungs hurting when doing sprint repeats is good. Means you were going hard. Good for you. Lungs hurting after is probably muscles rather than lungs. You don't mention a cough, which is also pretty normal.
