Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Foot feels like it is making a fist?

Hey guys,

My foot sometimes feels really tight ... like it is clenched, making a fist. This only happens with my right foot.
I can usually solve the problem by making the straps on my shoe really loose, but I like the feeling of tight fitting shoes.

Has anyone else experience this problem and what did you to resolve it? Should I try different insoles?

I have moved from shimano shoes to specialized (the pro model), which the LBS told me were wider. It has somewhat decreased the occurrence of the issue, but on the days that it happens, it is very inconvenient.

Thanks.

I actually feel like my shoes are too big (in terms of length). Could that be an issue?

I actually found Shimano shoes wider than Specialized. Sidi megas are the only shoes I've found to fit my feet properly.

If your cleats are too far forward you will be gripping with your toes. If they're too far back you'll be arching your toes upwards. You want the cleat in a neutral position where your toes aren't straining. And plenty of space to move them; the shoe shouldn't be held in place by your toes. This is all aggravated if the sole is soft and flexible.

Yep. If your shoes are too big, you will clinch up in an attempt to prevent your foot from sliding by pressing down your big toe. But assuming your shoes are tight, I would fiddle with cleat position first.

I have a similar feeling plus numbness. Loosening my straps lengthens the ride before I start feeling this. I went to a new LBS yesterday and while trying on different shoes, the owner noticed my cleats were a half inch too far forward.

Those were moved and I bought moldable insoles. I plan on a ride today and can't wait to see if this helps.

Also I have a pair of shimanos and they fit better than the specialized pro in a wide! Scott and Northwave were ok but still not right either.

I still think I may need something in a wide and if so I'll most likely but the shimano model that comes in a wide. They are 100 less than the sidi megas. Though I'd love to have Italian bling on my feet.
