Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Allez wheels question

I was wondering if anyone in this forum owns a specialized Allez 2012? What do you think about the wheels that came stock with the bike (axis)? Is it worth upgrading them? Someone at the bike shop told me that the wheels are the weakest part of the bike and should be upgraded? Can anyone give me their opinion? Tia

They are relatively heavy but probably bomb proof. Upgrade them if you have the money or if you think they're holding you back.

The Axis 2.0 came with my wife's Ruby. They're boat anchors, best estimate I could find was about 2200 g (w/ skewers (probably 80g ea)). Her's went out of true almost immediately (shop fixed), I suspect just a little bit off in tension from the factory. For her bike, they're complete overkill. Its a 51cm women's road bike, they don't need 24/32 spoke wheels.

For $250+, you could get a nice upgrade. That said, if you're a heavier rider they'll probably take more abuse than a lighter wheel. If you want to spend money, they aren't a bad place. If you don't feel like spending a few hundred dollars, they're fine for daily use.
