Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Favorite Crankset (Gearing) Is...

This is a companion to the 'Who really likes 50-34?' thread. That thread does not have a poll, so I am including one here.

Choices:

1. 53 X 42

2. 53 X 39

3. 50 X 34

4. 52 X 42 X 30

5. 52 X 39 X 30

6. 50 X 39 X 30

You can just vote or vote and leave a comment if you wish.

What about 50-36? 50-38? 52-36? 52-38? 55-42? This pole is very short cited.

You mean "sighted" not cited. And the poll has nothing to do with your sight or my citations. Or your crankiness.

It has a concise set of popular gearing options. Have a nice day. Or not.

50 x 36 is nice with my 11 speed 11-25 but I really like 50x34 for a 10 speed.

Yes, I should've included an "other" category, but didn't want the options list to get out of hand. Please keep voting!

I don't use my small ring on my normal ride, in retrospect I should have gone with 39-53 instead of 34-50 but then it is rather convenient to never shift the front.

Rohloff hub and then I only Need 1 chainring .. small wheel big ring , big wheel small ring

For my Brompton M3L I like the Schlumpf 2 speed crank Mine as if a 54/21.6..

but the 34t which overdrives like a 54t would be OK too , still only 1 chainring.

52-42-30 I can have my cake and eat it too. Gets me the 52-42 and much less double shifting. The 30 is a blessing on long hilly rides. I run an 8 speed so the triple gives me more choices. I don't particularly care about whatever small weight the setup adds.

Wow, what a surprise so far. I thought most people hated compacts and were always complaining about being stuck with one. Shows what I know.

Everything is a compromise. But compacts are a fairly decent one. I have never tried a 50/36, but it does seem ideal . Or as ideal as any compromise can be...

I was very surprised also. The preference for doubles is overwhelming. Triples have less than 20% of the vote.

Mine isn't in the poll, so I voted 50x34 because that is what I have on a bike.
