Stock Shimano RS10 vs Mavic Krysium
Thinking of an upgrade, and a nice set of wheels is a good way of slipping an N+1 past the wife. The RS 10's that came stock on the bike are OK, but I had a spoke go twang on the rear at about 2500 miles. (I am a little bit Clyde) I know a really good wheel builder who is trying to sell me a set of Krysium Elites. He is a LBS owner and a pretty straight up guy. He rebuilt a set of wheels on a hybrid I had been popping spokes on, and was trouble free after the rebuild.
I am in no position to be a weight weenie, but I do know a little physics and understand the bit about rotational inertia and acceleration, so can justify the purchase on those grounds. What are your thoughts on the merits of the two? I don't remember the price he was asking for the pair, about $600, but he deals, especially since he knows he gets repeat business from me.

Does seem a touch high...maybe they are new? These wheels are not areo, but do hold up to clydes pretty darn well in my experience. I think you'd notice a difference.
If you are okay with silver and slightly used, I just posted a pair of SL's in the 'marketplace'. I drank the 'wider rim' Kool-aid, and now have too many wheels.

They're new, and built with thin aero spokes

You mean the stock spoke for that set or something he customized?

Kysriums are terrible wheels. They have the least aero design possible. They also have stupid proprietary spokes that cause even more drag in a crosswind.
I would almost prefer the RS10 to them unless I'm doing a lot of climbing. I quite like RS10.

I think the spokes are stock. I'll have to check. Yes, the RS10, are pretty aero, but I do a fair amount of climbing too. Taking pounds off my azz is more important to me at this point and will help more with the climbing than grams off a wheel set.

Which is why they are so cheap and yet never, ever sell.
For the OP: The newest 'Elite S' retails for $800. Not worth it (IMO)...might be okay for $600. The non-S version from a year or two ago should be discounted a bit more than that. I'd probably get that spoke replaced and keep shopping. You can grab new take-off Elites on ebay for that price any day of the week.

Yup, they are the most overrated and overpriced wheels ever. I bought a few higher end bikes that came with Ksyrium SL wheels. I never have a problem selling them quickly at an inflated price on CL. Great for me, bad for the buyers.

My opinion of them differs a bit...but it's not a complete 180 from yours. No way I'd pay anywhere close to retail.

Interesting the few comments about them not selling. I see quite a few down here. I'll be looking at more options. I had that spoke fixed weeks ago, by the guy who has the Mavics.

Yeah, I doubt he's building them. Either way, it is an odd recommendation from a 'wheel builder.'

I've liked my Mavics, but found them almost too stiff (depending on the frame) for just general comfort/training. Tried running wider tires and that barely worked as the rims are quite narrow. Lately I've been trying out this wider rim business (Pacenti's and HED C2's). Jury is still out...but I've floated a few ads for my Ksyriums just to see.

I run a pair of Krysiums on my Fuji, and agree they're not phenomenal. But not bad and they can take a beating.
What I plan on replacing them with is Ritchey's new WCS Zeta IIs. Anyone have any experience on top of those? I'm looking for wheels for my style of riding: #1 endurance, #2 comfort, #3 durability. I'm not a fan of deep-rimed wheels because my experience is feeling more bumps through them.

Hello everyone hope all is well, new to forums hope i'm doing this correct. I'm looking at a backup wheelset for my supersix. I have the choice between shimano wh r501 bladed spoke wheelset schwalbe lugano tires never been ridden or shimano wh RS10 bladed Vittoria Rubino very lightly used. There both takeoffs from shop bikes so when I say lightly used very low mileage on the s10's. Price difference is $10 so that doesnt really factor in, also a pair of Mavic Aksium mileage under 2k, price on those is about $35 cheaper would appreciate your opinions thanks.

these wheels are pretty heavy, but if you're ok with that, than just fix the spoke and stick with them. i'm a Cylde too, and probably heavier than you, but a spoke breaking after only 2500 miles is pretty cheesy. are you looking for something lighter or more aero or a bit of both?!

That and the fact that I have a set on each of my 7 bikes (5 of mine and 2 of the wife's) going back at least 6 years and they are as straight and true as the day I put them on. Obviously you had a bad experience - maybe you should try to let it go.

Sometimes I roll on Aksiums, but I won't pay a penny over $150 for a set of Mavics (unless CCU). I just don't like their engineering.
