Is it normal to have black marks on the rim of a new wheelset?

Just got some wheelset off ebay. They were advertised as new.

It came in today and to my dismay, there were black marks on the rim and some tiny chips on the wheelset. These were by no means bad, but to me doesn't seem to be "new". Are these things normal to have on a new wheelset?

Were they advertised as new "take-offs" ?

It's possible they were on a bike that had 1 or 2 test rides, then tires removed and sold to you.

well, they definitely don't look new, most likely a take off set from a new bike that was either taken for a several quick test rides or a full ride or two. i wouldn't personally sweat it, after all you did get them on ebay, and the only person that knows the true condition of them is the seller. the black marks should come off with some rubbing alcohol and cotton towel, and if the small chips really bother you that much than just hit them lightly with 0000 steel wool, they should come right out. after that, the wheels should look pretty much brand new...

Those aren't brand new, that's for sure. Difficult to say how many miles they have, but it's definitely more than zero.

Yep. Using Ebay you have to beware. I have bought some stuff on Ebay. I have not been "burned", but I have gotten some things including a new component group which had a few more miles on it than advertised. It is still was great and I am using it and happy. Do the same.
