Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

[QUOTE=zymphad;16784789]I don't use a 2 bolt, my bolt is single is goes horizontal so I have perfect tilt movement, not ratcheting etc. Bontrager XXX type design FTW. [QUOTE]

I bought one of these "Bontranger XXX" branded seatposts off of Ebay last month, and have yet to install. Mine has some setback. Full carbon design; it is the lightest post I've ever handled.

It cost $32 with free shipping from China. I am interested in your review.

I would fear installing a $30 carbon seatpost - how can it rival even the cheap aluminum posts for safety??

thomson posts are strong, slick, light, and stiff as hell. Nothing wrong with them.

I prefer a seat post with some compliance, so for me there is something undesirable about them.

That's respectable. I prefer a stiff post and a gentle steel frame.

new probably a bad choice, but i found mine for 10 bucks at the local co-op. its all donation based, so someone donated a road bike and they stripped some glorified parts off it, like the carbon seat post, ultegra crank and few other things.

hell the other day someone donated a colnago which the co-op has for sale at 700 haha

As I said, I'm trying to get it to asplode, but it refuses. It's being stubborn. And it keeps the saddle so steady, it's annoying. Why won't it behave like the cheap carbon I've been warned about? Stupid thing doesn't know it's place.

I did replace the screw with a much stronger one from a LBS though. Can torque it much easier and better. It's the only cheap thing on it far as I'm concerned, that screw.

Many Race Face posts have a head design that further separates fore/aft and tilt adjustment. You can actually swap out saddles and the tilt adjustment remains exactly as it was.

3T ionic. I seem to fit best with a straight post, which can limit options somewhat. I like this one because you can adjust fore/aft without affecting tilt, although the tilt mechanism is bit fiddly. Plus it matches my handlebars, and that is essential, obviously

Any specific reason why? There doesn't seem to be anything specific to the clamp that would cause saddle rail failures over any other vertical clamping seatpost (as opposed to horizontal clamping like the bontrager). Maybe because the non-setback design had people cramming their saddles back past the over-limit line on the saddle rail? Or are people simply over-tightening the clamp specifically on Thomsons?

Incidentally, if I were to design a setback clamp that can go on a stock Thomson seatpost, would anyone buy it?

Depends:
* Would it work safely?
* How much setback?
* How much?

Darn it! This thread has made me burn my espresso! GOSHH...

On another note, I would find it extremely hard to find any difference between regular seat posts. I'd think maybe between ISP, specialized's Cobble GOBLR, and Regular seat posts. Me, like mentioned before, I like ISP. Had an incident not long ago where I ended up sitting very very hard on the top tube after a pot hole because the seat post twisted. ISP, ISP, ISP.

Well, it exists now only in my head. If I build it, I will definitely test it on my own bikes long before I sell it to someone else. I'll give it 2G's around the velodrome too. Setback can be whatever it needs to be, I reckon.
