Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Searching for Road Bike

Hi Everyone,

I want to start riding again, mainly weekend group rides or with friends. I had a Felt F65 a couple years ago before it was stolen. Now I am looking either new or old and price is a major factor. I started looking at new CAAD 10 105s, the LBS has it for $1500 otd. I'm also looking on CL and saw a few that I may be interested in. There is a 2006 Specialized Allez Elite w/105s that is asking $600, is that a fair price or too high?

Also in my situation, would it really be much of a difference if it had Shimano 2300s vs 105? My old bike had Ultegra, so I don't know how much of a difference I would feel.

Thank you for helping a newb.

Hey Ed, the Allez Elite is high. I just picked up a 2011 Allez Apex (Higher tier than Elite) for $650 with a bunch of goodies.

Current Blue Book Value is: 375-400

2006 Specialized Allez Elite Double - New and Used Bike Value

Can't comment on the set, I have Shimano on my MTB, but SRAM on my Road

To me that would be Tour de France and nobody has won on a Cannondale in the past 20 years at least

Thanks for the used bike list. It's very useful to gauge the CL prices. But almost everyone wants way higher than the listing (guess its summer months and depending on location, LA). In that case, almost all used bikes in my area is very high. Maybe I'll try to negotiate more at my LBS for a new CAAD 10 105 or CAAD 8 105

You're going to be hard pressed to find a deal on a used CAAD10 that's worth buying over a new bicycle if you ride a size between 52-56. 5700/105 is the cheapest line that shifts shifts really well and doesn't put long-ass cables in your face, flopping around.

Thanks for clarifying this misinformation. How serious do you think someone could possibly be when they suggest a 4-year old, aluminum bicycle won the TdF ten times?

Another member of the forum in Los Angles got a CAAD10 105 off CL for $700 a couple of weeks ago. There are deals to be found. I saw a CAAD10 with Ultegra and upgrades for $1400 or best offer a few weeks ago. Incycle in Pasadena was advertising last years CAAD10 105 for $1275 two weeks ago. Not on their site now but maybe worth calling and see if they have any left. I saw a CAAD10 colorway demo bike sell for about $1400 with shipping on Ebay a few weeks ago. CAAD10 is very popular bike so there are a lot available on the used market and dealers have left overs because they stock a lot of them

I checked out the 2006 Specialized Allez Elite. It was very clean, had no scratches. Rode it down the block and shifted fine and braked fine. The seller was very nice. Ended up getting it for $420

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice

Pretty good deal...better the more you ride it.

Sounds like one of the rare times that 420 on C-List actually means purchased for $420 in cash.
