I just started using my Forerunner 305 after a few years and have forgotten what software I used to use to upload the data to my computer. I searched the forum, but the most recent posts are from 2009!

Clearly the device is many years old. I found Training Center on Garmin's website, which sounds familiar, but that software was last updated in 2011, so they're either not supporting it now, or will stop supporting it shortly.

I mainly want to track my rides - how much I rode, when I rode, average/max speeds and heart rate - and I'm wondering

a) are software options better than Training Center (which are compatible with my device)
b) for my needs, am I better off using Strava or something other free option?

I am a runner and cycle too have used my fourunnrrer 305 for past 5 yes arms works great. I also have a cateye cycle computer but the 305 is dead accurate does all I need. If it is not broke don't fix it .,,,,,, and I am a good bike mech and wheel builder

I miss my Forerunner 305 (it broke and now I have the 210)! I just used Garmin Training Center and Strava (plus my own Excel sheet).

You should be able to just access it as a USB drive and yank the file and upload it to whatever you want. There's also the TrainingPeaks upload agent.

I wish there were a better way to mount the 305 on the bars (and not the wrist either). Takes too much space. Does anyone do something unique to keep their forerunner 305 attached to the bike - and in a usable manner?

I downloaded Training Center and it was nice to see my rides from the last time I used it - back in 2009! I read about people uploading Garmin data to Strava and was wondering how to do that. I will look into Training Peaks. Thanks

I recently ordered this mounting kit Amazon.com: Garmin Forerunner Bicycle Mount Kit: Electronics

It works well, but it does take up space on the handlebar. I can't see a way around that, if you want to have it on the handlebar - but it's much better than wearing it on the wrist

My 305 still gets plenty of use! The software I use is the free version of TrainingPeaks. Very easy and incredibly fast to use. I've enjoyed it soooo much more than Garmin's Training Centre or Connect. All you need is an app for your computer (from TrainingPeaks) called 'TrainingPeaks Device Agent' to upload from your 305. I have always had issues uploading from my device to Garmin's software, but not once had a problem with TP. Definitely recommend TP.

And if you aren't aware, you should check out the 'courses' feature on many Garmins, including the 305. It allows you to create routes on Garmin Connect, and then send them to your device for a sort of bread-crumb-like navigation map you can follow on your ride. Great for long rides in areas you aren't as familiar with.


I made a very simple mount for my 305 on my bike. It's basically a thin piece of 1"x6" aluminum, covered in hockey tape, bent into a sort of 'cradle' that is now zip tied to my stem. I have a piece of elastic material around the stem that holds the 305 in place. I've ridden over 1000 miles and not had one issue at all.

i wear it on my wrist and have the bike computer so no need to mount on bars.

Mine crapped out on me a few months ago and I upgraded to a Garmin 510. Way better for cycling.

you can mount that on here, and you would be able to put it in front of the bars. just make sure it is wide enough to fit between the 2 places where it mounts to the bars...

Not sure how much the aluminum was. It's been in the garage for a long time and I can't imagine it being that expensive at all. I'm sure you could find something around your house that's similar. The tab I have on the elastic piece just makes sliding the 305 in and out a lot easier. I don't have any issues with satellites or the unit sliding around; it's nice and snug. Easy to make with stuff I had around the house. I'm sure you can make the mount look nicer, too.

Also, despite the apparent forward tilt of the unit's display, it is absolutely no problem to read.

Strava -> Upload -> File, then browse to the file on the watch, and upload.
