Just Bought a bare Cannondale frame? Need help on parts.

Hi, been a long time since I've been here, just started back into biking. I have a Specialized Hardrock that I've been fixing, and that's pretty much done, but I decided that I would like to have a Road Bike eventually and found what I thought was a good deal for a frame, a Cannondale frame, got it for 20 bucks. So now I'm needing some information.

    1. How do I find out what frame I have? The frame was repainted, will have to do so again, the serial number is covered as well on the bottom bracket area, which means paint remover of some kind. The frame is aluminum and seems to be pretty light weight, The bike has a derailluer hanger that says SI on it.

    2. I need to know what headset, fork, and bottom bracket to go with.

Please provide feedback and ask me questions on any information you may need to help me out. I've started looking into parts, but this is a Cannondale and I'm not very familiar with their gear.

If you are going to paint it, you could start with a little paint remover at the serial #.

What width between dropouts? Are we talking something from classic 126mm spread? Are there bosses for downtube shifters?

Vintage Cannondales are great frames to upgrade with modern equipment. If you have the narrower dropouts and dont mind hand spreading them a little bit you can easily go for a cassette with 9sp or more. Also, if you want brifters you can buy a cablestop device that mounts on the shifter bosses. Forks are up to you.

Here is my '88 Criterium Series with a mix between old and new:

Having a flat tire as part of the total cycling experience is highly overrated. Knowing how to fix one quickly is not.

Looks to be more modern. Sorry I cant guess the year. One thing very nice to have is the front derailleur mounting plate.

Well, the useful info is that I know it's more modern, now I just need to find out how new, I'm guess it's in the 2000s year range, probably a frame made with CAAD, I think that's what it's called. Anyone else familiar with these frames?

Does the frame have a serial number? Should be on the bottom bracket. This should tell you a lot about the frame.

No downtube bosses, so post 2000, for sure. Possibly 2001/2 or later, CAAD 5.

Unfortunately when I started taking the paint off, I didn't see the serial number, which is a bummer.

The lack of hourglass seat stays means its before the CAAD4, which was introduced in 1999. I would bet its a CAAD2 frame as opposed to the 3 due to the lack of a tapered down tube. I don't think its older than the CAAD2 because it has the rear brake cable that runs on the bottom of the top tube. I believe the CAAD2 was sold on lower end models into the 00's. The lack of a paint/decals makes it hard to pinpoint year without the serial number (which should be engraved on the bottom of the bottom bracket ... you should not be able to remove it simply by taking off paint).

Alternatively, you could actually weigh the frame to figure out if it is a 3.0, 2.8, CAAD2/3.

Thanks for the awesome info, but when I look at CAAD2 frames, the head tube looks smaller than mine is. Also what do you mean by 3.0 and 2.8?

The 3.0 and 2.8 are the Cannondale frames they made before the CAAD frames. The 2.8 is more recent than the 3.0.

The integrated cable guides weren't intruduced until after the CAAD 2 and 3. They were still selling bikes.with downtube bosses in 2000. That was changed later on.

    3.0 & 2.8 refer to frame weight.

Check vintagecannondale.com they have all catalogs available and a handy reference guide to determine where your serial number should be.

Thanks, well any idea what kind of parts I need that would be specific to this frame? Fork, headset and bottom bracket?

Also, my rear derailluer hanger is telling me this frame is much newer, CAAD10, SuperSix or SuperSix Evo.

The frame is a CAAD10... They came out in 2011. They had not so smooth finishing around the welds for the first year. This frame does not have that, so it's more recent.

How come the head tube/down tube junction looks exactly like my 10? Not to mention flattened seat stays and what look like chain stays? am I just drunk? cause after googling, the dt looks too big where it's welded to the ht to be a caad2.

No joke, I found a guy selling it for 20 bones, I don't think the guy understood what he had or no one would buy a beat up frame, but I'm stripping it and it looks find underneath the messed up paint. So I'm going to paint it and build it.

Go raw. Just buy new decals and clear coat it. Though, find that serial# and check to be sure. Regardless, a $20 modern Cdale CAAD frame is a sweet find.

Oh yeah, I forgot another detail that tells me this is the newer CAAD10, this frame requires the press fit BB30 bottom bracket, I was told that it needs a press fit when I bought it.
