Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - May 31/June 1
Tell us about your cycling or other exercise activities/sports this weekend. Are you racing, touring, randonneuring, or riding recreationally? Inside or out?

Saturday - Yet another recovery weekend, unfortunately. Turns out I have bronchitis ... and a couple kidney stones which are giving me some issues.
So ... entertain me with your cycling stories and photos.

Well....off of crutches yesterday, 6 weeks after my 5th (or is it 6th) foot surgery. 11KM today...THHE slowest and close to the most difficult 11KM I have ever ridden. My legs hurt and my feet ache, but DAMN it felt good to be in the saddle again.

I posted this on our local cycling board, but hey, it was an experience worth repeating to others.
I pretty much did everything wrong today -
* Forgot my water bottle at home, which meant I had to frequently go off course or slow down to look for watering holes (parks, gas stations.)
* Despite @Machka 's excellent advise on nutrition in the long distance cycling section, I knowingly threw it to the wind. i consumed two peanut butter pop tarts during the entire 85 miles.
* I am fighting a sinus infection/cold since Thursday, so my body wasn't even up for doing any sort of distance aside from a local jaunt.
* Despite a forecast of abundant sunshine and warm temperatures, I tossed aside any notion of wearing sunscreen.
So now, I've got a headache (probably dehydration and hunger) and a wicked, wicked sunburn. Oh, did I mention I just started peeling from the SUNBURN I GOT TWO WEEKS AGO?! All that aside, I had fun riding my new bike. For the most part, the miles seemed to just accumulate as my head and thoughts were clear.
I have no idea how to put in my Strava HTML code for the ride, but wouldn't mind showing, if anyone knows how.

I started with short rides(10-15miles) in late April. Now 60-70 mile rides feel good again. I'm weak and slow, but no worse than the average guy here.
Don't rush. It won't help anything.

Honestly, if I don't look at the metrics, I feel great.

103 miles, 10K+ of climbing, near Lexington VA and up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway
Lexington, Buchanan, BRP
Yes, it was slow, but... it was HILLY. Also I ran into about a ten-mile stretch of gravel on the Bluegrass Trail tat I wasn't expecting, and it was on the part that goes up and over a mountain. The weather was beautiful, the traffic was practically nonexistent, and my legs are fried to a crisp, but man it was a great day.

I did 4 hrs in the shop to finish up a run of parts I've been laboring on then hit the road and did fifty miles with my friend today.... west out of Monroe, OR to Alsea Falls, then down to the town of Alsea, then back. The scenic aspect would be fairly stunning if you hadn't been here before... I've lived here almost 30 years and it got my attention! Gorgeous and pastoral... sweet cool air...
It was a medium-hard route. A lot of climbing. The hardest part was at roughly miles 10-18; aka the climb up to the Falls. Steep enough to have a real bite to it, and then long and relentless. The other climbing was more 10-12 mph stuff, but that initial section is non-trivial.
They were replacing culverts on this narrow old road in the woods, so there were 7-8 fairly scary gravel crossings. Loose gravel, with 25's, and clipped-in, sucks.
Came back to a pot of beans and some chicken my wife had made. Wrapped it up in tortillas with some of my brother's Bonache brand hot sauce and funky-ass sour cream from deep in the fridge. A good day.

I rode 31 miles, diddled along, enjoyed myself, and had a really slow average moving speed. I also grabbed a KOM from a bunch of Freds, making me the king of the Freds.
Strava needs to offer a KOF award. No racer boys, no tri-chicks, just Freds.
Anyway, I did some serious training:
This is a new bridge that goes under a crazy busy Taylorsville Road. There are going to be some nasty head-ons amount the noobs here until they figure out to go very slowly and hit the Hello Kitty bell.

Standard 60 mile loop. Just over 16 mph ave. Consumed: 5 dates, 1 banana, 1 slice pizza, 1 small coffee, ~3 bottles water.
Minor mechanicals- FD trim, & accidentally (mis)adjusted RD instead- embarrassing racket.
New wool shorts- a bit tight & the pad lining kind of rough, breathe great.
Multiple hard insect strikes to the face.
Minor but gratifying compliment from stronger rider.

Yesterday was a 57.8 mile ride at 16.8mph average, today was 35.2 miles at 17.5mph average.
Not horrid for a guy basically starting out as a broken heap.

easy ride sat, end of recovery week, 2.25 hrs. Hit one ~2min climb at ~450W and another 7min climb at 350W to keep things fresh but otherwise kept at around or under 100w
gym day today, also easier (than normal) workout: 2x8 80lbs step-up, each leg, 2x10 110llb hip abductor than adductor, 2x10 120lb calf raise, some ab work in between. during "on" weeks my bread and butter gym lifts are squats and deadlifts, both 3x8.

Did my first 50 mile ride today. Averaged (moving according to Endomondo) just shy of 15 mph. Mixed flat and rolling hills. 37 miles was my previous best. I am trying to get used to group riding so its a bit a of change for me to maintain cadence and speed I normally do solo.

Saturday: went for a nice 37 mile ride with nearly 2000 ft of elevation gain.
Sunday: went on a 20 miles ride only 1100 ft gain, then went on a SLOW family ride (10 miles) towing a baby trailer.
Great weekend!
