Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal and Shoe recommendation

Hey Guys,
I just bought my first road bike upgrading from a hybrid. It's a 2013 Jamis Ventura race and so far I love it! I'm think of getting clipless pedals and shoes. I have never used them before. Right now I'm using regular pedals with toe clips and I'm really not crazy about them. Any suggestions for a decent road bike shoe/pedal set without breaking the bank? Also, Can a mountain bike shoe and pedal be used. I kind of like them better than a flat shoe.

Thanks,
Rob...
Here is the bike!

Toe clips are the worst of all worlds. MTB shoes and pedals are a great option for people not looking to squeeze the last ounce of performance.

I've certainly enjoyed my Speedplay Frog pedals and Pearly Izumi sneaker style shoes on the Secteur . . . I like riding, but also like to be able to walk around where I ride to!

MTB clipins: Pros: dead easy to use, shed mud like anything. Cons: slightly heavier than road-bike pedals.

Shimano SPD-SL: Pros. Best seller of all time. Sold everywhere. Cons: Cleats wear out fairly quickly, at around $30 / pair.

Speedplays. Pros. Just jam your foot down and go. Cons. Cleats are expensive, and ponderous and hard to walk in, with or without protective pads.

Time. Don't know anything about these; anxious to try out a set.

Look pedals are great, ease of use and reliability. The Keo Classics are pretty inexpensive, I use the Keo Max (my favorite) and have also used the Keo Blades.

MTB shoes and pedals will do just fine. Would you mind giving us your budget so we have a better idea of how to help?

Don't know if your shop has them but I know people with this shoe and they love them...

I had looks, they work well, I felt the cleats wore out faster than my spd-sl cleats. imho, Shimano 105 pedals and whatever shoes you are comfortable with it a tough combination to beat. if you plan to get a MTB with clipless, get the SPD (mtb style shown above) for the road bike and use your shoes for both. you don't have to spend crazy money to get something that works and is comfy.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm looking at these. I'm probably going to try road pedals and shoes. Let me know what you think.

Take a look at r550s. They are more like the upper-end Shimano pedals with a wider platform and a metal contact plate instead of the plastic one on the r540s (this wears out).

$20 or so for extra cleats there, too.

Buying shoes online that you've never tried on for a cleat/pedal system you've never used might be a problem. Get the pedals/cleats online then get a pair of shoes you've tried on at a local store...

And, you don't have to have "MTB" shoes with cleats; I have Specialized shoes with "road" styling and a normal tread, but still with a recessed area so the cleats are protected.

Unfortunately, The LBS here has crap for shoes. (At least nothing I liked) I'm not in a rush. If they don't fit I'll just send them back. I at least like the looks of them.

Well, this is what I ended up with. I got the shoes and luckily they fit perfectly. Set everything up today and went for my first ride. Actually, I only fell once. Pretty embarrassing but at least I didn't get hurt. It is making a world of difference. So much better than the toe cages. I'm very happy so far. I appreciate the help guys.
