Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vittoria Rubino Pro - went POP

I have been riding Rubino Pro’s for a short while. The first rear had slightly over 2K miles on it, and I changed it out for a new. (always buy 3 at a time) I now had maybe 2-300 miles on the new rear, and tonight I heard a noise for about 200 feet, then the sidewall blew out. The fabric bead where it meets the rubber sidewall completely failed. Has this been a common occurrence on these? I must say this has soured me somewhat to the Rubino’s. I was looking for a high milage durable, light training tire. (who isn’t?) Thanks for the input-

Sounds like a bad tire. You should contact Vittoria and see if they will give you a new tire.

Agreed, but first check to be sure that the brake pads are properly adjusted so they couldn't have rubbed against the sidewall at the bead.

Many factors can be involved in a blow out. I have been riding Vittorria Rubino Pro's for years. Which model do you ride? I find the III's with 150 TPI to be the best training tire on the market....supple, grippy, long wear with excellent puncture resistance.

Lower end Rubino's are a far cry from the Pro III's. Based upon my experience, for many thousands of miles on Rubino Pro 1, II's and now III's, I have never had a blow out. OK, now I just did it.

They were Rubino III, 150 TPI. I gave a quick call to Vittoria, and they are send a new one. Nice a big company will stand behind 1 blown out tire. I have been nothing bu satisfied with these, good handling, long wearing, and pretty light considering. I would highly recommend these if you are looking for a long wearing training tire

OK, nice that they're standing behind you but how on earth can you recommend something as long wearing when you JUST had one (out of your sample set of 2) fail on you at 200 miles?

C'mon. You had one last 2k. Even that's not particularly long wearing, although I am generally satisfied if I get 2k out of a rear.

I've gotta point out Continental's Grand Prix 4000s. Michelin Pro 4 & Vittoria Rubino Pros have also been under me for thousands of miles, and the Grand Prix rolls faster than the Rubinos + better puncture protection than both. Some of the Pro 4s roll faster than the Grand Prix 4000s though, so I run the Attack & Force.
